Swine Flu Outbreak – What are the Symptoms?

swine flu symptoms

Media outlets all over the U.S. and around the world are reporting an outbreak of the swine flu that originated in Mexico, so naturally, people are concerned about the swine flu symptoms as they educate themselves about the ailment. We did a little searching and the following are some resources where you can get more information:

Swine Flu Symptoms

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and prevention says this about the swine flu symptoms

What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans?

The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Can people catch swine flu from eating pork?

No. Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. You can not get swine influenza from eating pork or pork products. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills the swine flu virus as it does other bacteria and viruses.

How does swine flu spread?

Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with flu viruses from pigs are most likely to occur when people are in close proximity to infected pigs, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits housing pigs at fairs. Human-to-human transmission of swine flu can also occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

The CDC recommends routine precautions to prevent the spread of infectious diseases: wash your hands often, cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, avoid close contact with sick people. If you are sick, stay at home and limit contact with others.

You can also find out more about the swine flu and it’s symptoms from this article at the Associated Press and from a site called Suite101 here.

  1. Mexico and America are already under alert and people have already started panicking in Europe..this is more serious than thought of.

Why is no-one questioning what the government was doing about the Swine flu?

There are no vaccines in the market. Can anyone tell me what the complete list of symptoms and precautions are?

There are no vaccines for the swine flu because this is a new virus (meaning it never existed before now). The CDC has already started work in trying to prepair a vaccine for the swine flu virus, however, the vaccine will only be ready for the next flu season… or so they are hoping.

Symptoms are similar to the influenza flu virus. Symptoms include; fever, lethargy, sore throat, runny nose, coughing, vomiting, lack of appetite, and diarrhea.

The best way to aviod contacting the virus is to stay away from those who are sick, and to was your hands very often.

  3. Fortunately there are many things one can do to strengthen the immune system so as not to be an easy target for the Swine Flu.

It sounds like the swine flu symtoms are exactley like the flu. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?

  5. I just got over the swine flu. I am a 44 year old healthy male. I am the first case in the state of WA. Here in Seattle, I felt body aches first, then nausea and SEVERE lethargy/lack of energy. Walking across the room wore me out to huffing and panting for my breath. Then came the incessant diarreha and the unbelievable constant headache. It brought me to tears. I couldn't drink enough water to keep me hydrated so I ended up at the UW hospital with an IV drip. After 6 hours or so I went home and slept. It was 2 days after that when I began to come around. The whole thing lasted four days, 13 hours. If you feel any symptoms drink water immediately. Don't let yourself become dehydrated.

  6. the swine influenza first appeared in the 1930s.

  8. My Doctor and her staff informed me that I was the first case in WA and I am to follow up Monday A.M. for more tests and to answer some questions regarding my activities and whereabouts for the past 90 days.

I think that until this is settled we should have no school or work. this is our health and if we all die then we can't work or go to school. so unempolyement will increase but at least we will be alive.

Holy crap! I wasnt too worried until I started reading these blogs but now Im wondering if I should ger checked. I'm usually pretty healthy but I've been sick for over a week now. Alot of the symptoms match up with the swine flu.. nausea headaches, absolutly no energy, dehydrated no appitite and too week to even go to the store.

  20. your mom has the swine flu

  21. This is not a new virus, It had an outbreak in the Early 1930's. This has been a problem for about 80 years now, and is now becoming a global problem. The reason it can't be vaccine is not that it's new, it's because it's constantly mutating and it is always changing form. Get it right.

  22. the virus can't be transmited by food.

  23. Ohh, it's in Washington now? I'm in Portland, OR..wonder if there will be outbreaks here next.

I have a sore throat and my body feels heavy…I'm pretty sure it's not the swine flu though, lol.

i was just like you ….now im feeling better , but im scared now because many of my colleges are sick ..

  25. Paul, I can't believe this – I just got over a 5 day bout of the exact same symptoms, only I'm in Nova Scotia. My son had it first, then me, my husband, and now an uncle of mine. It was the worst illness I've had in years. Did you have any respiratory problems? We did not, which is why I didn't really think it could be swine flu, but your symptoms are identical to what we al went through.

Umm… you dont need to be an A$$ because I wasnt fully correct on my answer. I am only 26 years old.. how am I supposed to know that there was a previous outbreak. I got all my information from research online. And those were not my words… so if you are going to correct me then you might as well do some searching of your own and correct every one else as well. I did find out today that there was an outbreak of swine flu many years ago and was planning to correct myself later. I was only trying to be nice and answer some questions to those who were looking for answers. I guess this is what I get for trying to help someone.

Brimstone and fire would have to be upon us and Satan with his pitchfork in our backs before we get no school or work. Our best bet is to build up our immune systems with all natural products. I just find it amazing to find this swine flu spread out on all sides. I'm in FL…so far I've heard of no cases…so far…

Wow. I live in metro detroit. That's disgusting. If there are visibly ill people on a flight back from cancun, and there is vomit all over the rest room, it should be quarantined. What the hell is wrong with that airline?

It's already here, in two counties. Livingston is one of them.

Unfortunately, most of the people dying from this in mexico are healthy young 20 – 40 year olds. Just like back in the spanish influenza pandemic of 1918, it seems that a very strong immune system is not very helpful when it comes to this flu. You see, the stronger your immune system is, the harder it fights this virus, and if your immune system creates a cytokine storm, it could end up killing you in the process.

sounds like normal flu to me.. i hav tonsillitis and hav the sore throat, runny nose, fever, headaches… everyone is panicking even when it's just the normal flu or cold because it's hard to differentiate when the symptoms are the SAME… you think there'd be a distinguishing factor… im in melbourne, victoria, australia, so i don't think it's swine flu.

I was REALLY sick a couple weeks ago. I too had trouble breathing and walking anywhere across any room. I could hardly talk at lenght on the phone. I did not see a doctor. I figured it's just a flu, and a pretty bad one. I had a refill on antibiotic and prednisone and took that. It helped a little, but I was still sick after I was done with the meds. Still haven't seen a doctor, but am better. The more I read about this new flu, the more I am convinced that I may have had it. But I suppose it's too late to have that confirmed. I even had a temp for 3 days. The worst part for me was the breathing. It was bad. I am not the type to run to a doctor every time I am sick, but now after the fact, I wish I had ….this way I could have had it confirmed if I had the swine flu. Part of me feels like I did……

  41. You could probably have your blood tested still. If ou have insurance it wouldnt hurt to get tested. Call your doctor they should be able to tell you if they could find out for sure. Im sure you arent the only one who would want to know if you did have it.

Those are the symptoms of swine flu but it is so hard to tell what it is because those are the symptoms to many other illnesses as well. You could always call your doctor and see what they have to say. Maybe they will order testing to see if you have the swine flu or not.

Do research cause obviously this isnt a new virus. A swine flu outbreak happened in the 1970's and the shots they have gave for it ussauly killed the person who got vaccinated

  45. TaniaB26

I have done my research. And yes you are right, however; this particular strand of swine influenza virus is not the same as the virus years ago. It has mutated to something different. Specialists are saying it seems to be some type of combination of the swine flu and bird flu. Maybe you should be the one to do research. And why is everyone talking crap and giving me a hard time. I was only trying to help someone to get to know the symptoms of the virus. Give me a break!

I did call and they said they can't confirm it at this point.

do you really believe what the doctors are tellin us……its all rubbish……swine flu is just another man made disease made to cull the population, just like h.i.v……….the smaller the population the easier it will be to control for the 2012 takeover…….will everone please wake up and smeel the coffee

  48. i have a sore throat, could that mean that i possibly am getting the swine flu?

  49. Um, I'm sorry Tania, but the ONLY THING that person typed in his response that was directed at you was “get it right.” If you overreact like you did to *those three words* and think that person is insulting you by merely saying “get it right,” I'd hate to see how you function in the real world when someone REALLY criticizes you.

In all honesty, you came on here and posted a rather definitive answer/comment. Nowhere in your post does it say “I'm quoting someone else,” or “I'm only 26 (which is a fantastically stupid excuse)” or “I'm not sure if this is right,” etc.

Facts are facts: You posted an incorrect statement, and someone called you on it. They didn't insult you or berate you. Get over it. Stop being so defensive and grow up. And those of you defending her need to read the guy's original response and ask yourself HOW he “acted like an ass” by simply correcting her.

I'm sorry, but people need to grow a thicker skin if they think the phrase, “get it right” is a personal insult. You provided misinformation, and you were corrected. In today's internet world, consider yourself lucky you weren't REALLY insulted.

  50. No, he was right.

First of all, you do not seem like you are very sorry because you seem to be giving me a hard time also. Secondly, I am not trying to make up excuses for myself about my age. I only stated that I am 26 and I have not heard about the swine flu before now, so how am I supposed to know that there were previous cases of swine flu, especially since the CDC stated it was a NEW virus. So what did I really post that was incorrect anyways??? I would really like to know. I posted my first response to a person who was looking for a list of symptoms and precautions for the swine flu, and that is what I gave them. I don't know why some people have to reply and post rude comments back at me when I am only trying to help someone out who is scared. Also, just for your information, I have been in the real world on my own for over ten years now.. working full time… in college full time,.. and with my three young children… and I know what it is like to be critisized and insulted. I am not saying that I am perfect and get everything right all the time.. but who really does. From now on, why don't you mind your business when it comes to conflicts online that does not include you. That post was also one month ago… I think it is time to let it go… don't you?
