‘Outlander’ Star Caitriona Balfe On Season 2: ‘It Changes Everything’

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Outlander.

Outlander is well into filming the second season, and the cast has only taken a break from filming to appear at Comic Con, says Caitriona Balfe, who also says that the Outlander cast and crew are currently filming the new season’s fifth episode. Ms. Balfe said that she has really been enjoying her character’s material. Caitriona also revealed that Claire Randall is pregnant as the second season of Outlander picks up.

“It’s going really good,” Outlander‘s Balfe said in an interview. “It’s a very visually – a very different show this year. I mean, obviously Claire and Jamie are sort of center and all that still. But yeah, it’s really beautiful. The sets are fantastic -so rich and so lush and the costumes are incredible, but you know what I’ve been really enjoying is that Claire’s pregnant and playing all of that- what that brings up in her and about impending motherhood and everything. It’s just been a really, really fun, great material to work with.”

Caitriona says that the addition of the pregnancy and thoughts of a child on the way gives opportunities for Outlander‘s characters to dwell on past experiences that may have needed some attention. Particularly with Claire, who has to figure out a way to resolve her family issues, while being so far removed from those family members.

“It changes everything,” Caitriona told Access Hollywood. “When you kind of believe that something is impossible and then that changes… it brings up a lot of stuff about her own family and her past. She lost her parents when she was 5, so she’s never really had that kind of mother figure there to guide her, and I think it brings up a lot of that stuff for her, but it’s something that brings Jamie and Claire really together, and it’s a beautiful part of the story.”

While much of Outlander will take place in the past, Caitriona says that there are some scenes in the second season that deal with Claire’s husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies), in the ’40s.

“We did some stuff back in the ’40s and it’s beautiful. Ron [D. Moore] wrote that stuff, and yeah, I think Tobias and I just really — I don’t think either of us felt that we’d had such great material,” Ms. Balfe said. “It’s just fantastic. It’s fantastic stuff to play.”

The second season of Outlander will premiere in 2016 on Starz.
