Sigourney Weaver On ‘Alien Vs. Predator’ Film: ‘Why Would You Want To Do That?’

Sigourney Weaver makes no secret that she wasn’t a big fan of AVP: Alien vs Predator (2004) and Ms. Weaver has said that she was “really depressed” by the film, so it should come as no surprise that Sigourney was outspoken on the subject at the most recent Comic Con as well.

“I heard that Fox was gonna do Alien vs. Predator [around the time of Alien 3],” Weaver said. “Which really depressed me because I was very proud of the movies.”

The Alien vs Predator was again brought up this year, when a fan asked Ms. Weaver if it had been her idea to kill of the Ripley character in the third Alien film.

“Well, yes, because I heard that Fox was gonna do Alien Vs. Predator,” Sigourney said. “As [Aliens director] Jim Cameron said, I think publicly, ‘Why would you want to do that? It’s like Alien meets The Wolfman.'”

Ms. Weaver said that she wasn’t the only one to limit involvement with the Alien franchise, upon the release of the news that Fox would be green-lighting the Alien vs Predator project. Initially, Ridley Scott had considered signing on to direct Alien 3, but news of Alien vs Predator caused Scott to back away from the third film.

“In fact, Ridley Scott was about to direct a third one, until this was announced, and he dropped out, because he also wanted to do an Alien sequel,” Sigourney said. “I think it caused more problems than it was worth.”

Ms. Weaver is expected to return in the role of Ripley, when the fifth Alien sequel hits theaters. The new Alien film, which will pick up following the events of 1986’s Aliens film, is to be directed by Neill Blomkamp. Sigourney has been just as outspoken in her support of Blomkamp as she has been critical of the Alien vs Predator film.

“I’m so excited about Neill, because Neill is like you guys,” Ms. Weaver said. “He broke the tapes of these movies when he was a kid, he watched them so much.”

Recently, Fox came under public scrutiny for issuing a cease and desist order against an Alien fan film project with the studio claiming the film too closely resembled the Neill Blomkamp Alien film project.

The fifth Alien sequel, directed by Neill Blomkamp and starring Michael Biehn and Sigourney Weaver, is scheduled for a 2017 theatrical release.
