‘The Goonies 2’ Is Still In The Works, But It’s Been ‘Difficult’

Goonies 2, the sequel to the original Goonies, is coming along, but not without some difficulty.

Screenwriter Chris Columbus opened up to HuffPost Live, while promoting his new project Pixels starring Adam Sandler and Josh Gad. He said that while the Goonies sequel is still happening, it isn’t exactly on the forefront of the projects he has up and coming.

One of the largest problems is that The Goonies 2 doesn’t currently have a script, which as you could probably guess, is something production has to get together before they continue with the project.

“There are a lot of writers who are interested in writing Goonies, but we’re very protective because it’s such a well-loved movie,” Columbus explained.

He continued, “The Goonies have aged 30 years, so there was a magic about that particular cast. How do you make it work now? That’s a difficult challenge.”

So it seems like while there is interest in the sequel, production doesn’t know how to go about recreating the magic or translating the sequel to an all-grown-up version for the cast to play with.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the Goonies sequel. The Inquisitr reported cast members Sean Astin and Corey Feldman joking it up in a chat with Huff Post Live. Back then, Sean gave hints early on that they were looking for the perfect screenwriter, which they obviously haven’t found since then.

“I happen to know that they are actively trying to secure a writer based on an outline that they feel really confident about. When Steven [Spielberg], who ultimately is the decision-maker on this, when he has felt the magic and he and [The Goonies director Richard Donner] are in agreement, which I believe will happen, then it will be a thing.”

At the time, Feldman was unsure what was going on, as Richard Donner had told him it was happening, but that was all he really knew about the sequel.

“I called you when Dick told me but then he makes this announcement, haphazardly to TMZ and gets the entire world excited and talking about it, and then does nothing. Then a month passes and then he makes another announcement that Steven [Spielberg] is involved, and then he does nothing. He kind of threw us under the bus on that.”

Do you think The Goonies should be revisited?
