Martin Freeman Details His ‘Captain America: Civil War’ Role

The upcoming release of Captain America: Civil War will usher in Marvel’s Phase Three movies, with a host of new characters along for the ride, and Martin Freeman has hinted at which one he may be playing.

During an interview with the Italian website BadTaste, Freeman was asked about which character he will portray in Civil War. The film made headlines when it was revealed that a host of Marvel’s superheroes would be appearing in it, yet Freeman stands out as a new addition to the cast. Speculation has run rampant regarding who he might play, with some even suggesting that he could be the new Spider-Man, as the Inquisitr previously reported (Those rumors were quashed earlier this month when it was announced that Tom Holland was cast in the role).

Freeman gave up some key details about his Civil War character during the interview, insinuating certain aspects of the plot as well.

“He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes and certain agencies that help to…tame…the superheroes power. You’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another.”

During a Meet & Greet at the Giffoni Film Festival over the weekend, Freeman noted a few other details about his character, as Comic Book Movie reports.

“I’ve done a few days shooting on the Civil War film. I have two more days to go, so it’s a relatively small part. Within the framework of the film, he is ambiguous. I like that you can’t tell if he is a goodie or a baddie. But he works for the government and a part of his job, is to keep the superheroes and powers in check. Unless they fire me, it’s a role that will carry on.”

As Yahoo News points out, Freeman’s description could be taken as an indication that he is playing a new character, specifically created for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is every possibility, however, that he could be portraying a character from the Civil War comic that has heretofore been absent from the screen.

Henry Peter Gyrich, a CIA (or NSA) agent who occasionally takes the role of government liaison to the Avengers, seems a spot-on match for Freeman’s description. With the idea of government oversight of superheroes a central tenant of Civil War, as Kevin Feige has already detailed, Gyrich would be a logical addition to the MCU. A member of the Commission of Superhuman Activities (CSA), Gyrich has consistently been in a position of authority over the Avengers in the comics. He has also acted as a U.S. government liaison to Wakanda and Black Panther, a confirmed character in Civil War who is also set to feature in his own solo film.

It has been rumored (but not confirmed) that Freeman will appear in the Black Panther movie as well. While some fans have asserted that Freeman is playing Gyrich, others have suggested he is actually playing Everett Ross, an American Regent of Wakanda, which would also potentially tie him to Black Panther.

Whatever Martin Freeman’s role proves to be, Captain America: Civil War will hit theaters on May 6, 2016.
