‘The Wire’ Cast Reunites In Baltimore


The Wire cast reunited in Baltimore in an event organized so residents could share their “real-life” stories about living in the city. The cast of the HBO hit series spent the Saturday in the city, which was torn about by rioting. The event was titled, “Wired Up! A Celebration of the Spirit + Power of the People of Baltimore.”

Cast members from The Wire, which attended the Baltimore real-life stories event include: Larry Gilliard Jr. (D’Angelo Barksdale), Felicia “Snoop” Pearson (Snoop), Michael K. Williams (Omar Little), Sonja Sohn (Detective Shakima “Kima” Greggs), and Andre Royo (“Bubbles” Cousins), according to the Baltimore Sun.

Series creator, David Simon, Dominic West (Detective Jimmy McNulty), and Wendell Pierce (Detective Bunk Moreland), joined other The Wire cast members and Baltimore citizens via taped video messages.

Michael K. Williams told the Baltimore Sun that he came to love Baltimore while in the city to shoot The Wire, which aired on HBO from 2002-2008.

“I feel that it is my responsibility to use whatever platform I’ve got to shine light on the people and the problems they face,” he said. “In the eight years I was here, I saw a lot of positives. I saw a lot of potential. And, I saw a whole lot of passion.”

The “Wired Up! A Celebration of the Spirit + Power of the People of Baltimore” reportedly showcased the actor reading monologues which were written by West Baltimore citizens who participated in a 2-day workshop prior to The Wire cast reuniting in the city. According to the event website, the gathering was created to celebrate the resiliency of Charm City and to recognize “the ‘unsung heroes’ of Baltimore — those who serve inside and amongst the community, tirelessly and selflessly.”

The Wire Up! monologues reportedly focused on the Baltimore riots which after the death of Freddie Gray while he was in police custody in April.

“We can’t wait for more people to die,” Sonja Sohn said at the event. “We can’t wait for any more black men to die at the hands of police officers who were acting irresponsibly. That’s why we put this event together. We’re actors, and what we can do is to build a platform to raise voices that need to be heard.”
