Can’t Wait For ‘Fear The Walking Dead’ To Start? Why Not Try AMC’s ‘Humans’?

Fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead are hotly anticipating the network’s spin-off series, Fear The Walking Dead. However, since the premiere announcement date, time seems to be slowing down even further still. So why not check out AMC’s Humans while you’re waiting?

Humans is based on a Swedish program, Real Humans, and as Uproxx points out, the AMC version is “a show that’s beyond creepy in nearly every scene.” Humans is all about human-like robots, or Synths. These androids can be purchased in the same way one would buy a computer or an iPad and are used as a human-like servant to the owner. But, as the Humans synopsis from AMC points out, there is more to this story than just buying a robot and having it do your laundry for you.

Humans is set in a parallel present, where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a Synth – a highly-developed robotic servant, eerily similar to its live counterpart. In the hope of transforming the way his family lives, father Joe Hawkins (Tom Goodman-Hill) purchases a Synth (Gemma Chan) against the wishes of his wife (Katharine Parkinson), only to discover that sharing life with a machine has far-reaching and chilling consequences.”

The series kicked off to record ratings in the UK where it debuted a full two weeks prior to the U.S. release date of June 28. Episode 4 of Humans has just premiered today and as per many AMC pilot series, Season 1 will debut with a shortened season of only eight episodes. According to Deadline, the U.S. premiere of Humans received a 30 percent increase on first time viewers over the UK release on June 14.

While fans are warming to AMC’s latest sci-fi drama, there is still no official news on whether Humans will survive beyond Season 1 – even with its impressive ratings. However, Gemma Chan did tell Den of Geek during a recent interview that the Season 1 finale does leave a few loose ends that could, potentially, help flesh out the beginnings of Season 2 if AMC renews Humans.

“There are definitely still areas to be explored for a second series… It’s not completely tied up at the end.”

While fans may argue that the sci-fi Humans is nothing like the apocalyptic horror of The Walking Dead, there is still definitely that feel of a threat to the end of the world as we know it. After all, what happens if the Synths in Humans rise up and take over the world?

New episodes of Humans Season 1 premiere on AMC Sundays at 9/8c. Episodes are also available the next day on VOD and amc.com.
