New York Mets Rumors: Is Michael Cuddyer Destined For The Disabled List?

The New York Mets scored a huge, albeit long win on Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Mets won the nearly six-hour contest in 18 innings and avoided being swept by the National League Central leaders. New York even spiced things up a bit by throwing in a squeeze bunt by Eric Campbell to score their final run.

The Mets’ win came at a cost as left fielder Michael Cuddyer tweaked his knee again and may be headed for a stint on the disabled list. Jared Diamond of the Wall Street Journal sent out a couple of tweets on Sunday that could be cause for concern for Mets fans.

NJ is reporting that Cuddyer isn’t sure how his knee is going to react.

“We’re going to try something else and try to get through it. I think that would be our last effort to try. Hopefully that works.”

Cuddyer’s injury comes at a bad time for the Mets as they are about to begin a huge three game series against the Washington Nationals, who are in first place in the N.L. East just two games ahead of the Mets. New York’s offense has been sputtering managing just seven runs in their last 36 innings of play.

Michael has had a rough first season in New York. After back to back seasons of hitting over.330 with the Colorado Rockies, Cuddyer signed a two-year deal worth a total of $21 million. This year, he has managed to hit just.249 while battling to stay on the field.

If a stay on the disabled list is imminent for Cuddyer the Mets have options to fill his spot in the lineup. From inside the organization the Mets could turn to prospect Michael Conforto. Newsday is reporting that one rival scout believes Conforto could play in the majors, even though he hasn’t played above AA.

“I will say this, if anyone in the Mets’ system could, it would be him. He goes up to plate with confidence and a good swing.”

The Mets are more likely going to turn to the trade market for help and there are a few solid options available. As reported on earlier at the Inquisitr the Mets have been connected to big name outfielders such as Justin Upton, Carlos Gomez, and Yasiel Puig. Any deal will likely cost the Mets some of their young pitching, but they have a surplus in that area.

The New York Mets haven’t made the playoffs since 2006, and fans are certainly hoping that drought ends. What happens in the next two weeks will likely determine whether the Mets play October baseball or October golf.
