Sam Smith: Segway Accident And Thunderstorm Overshadow Comeback Tour


Sam Smith’s Segway accident only caused a minor injury. However a severe thunderstorm halted his performance at the Louisville, Kentucky, Forecastle Music Festival.

According to reports, Smith sprained his hand when he fell off the battery-powered scooter. As the injury was minor, he expected to continue his 75-minute set. Unfortunately, the show was cut short when a violent storm forced evacuation of the venue.

WDRB reports the powerful storm had sustained winds of 60 mph. Although it caused numerous power outages, there were no reports of serious injuries or major damage at the venue.

Following Sam Smith’s Segway accident and show cancellation, he apologized via social media and let his fans known the injury was not serious.

A native of London, England, Smith always enjoyed singing. As his mother recognized his natural talent, she risked her own career promoting her son’s music. Although he began recording songs before the age of 15, the soulful singer got his big break in 2012.

As reported by Biography, Sam Smith’s vocals were used in Disclosure’s 2012 single “Latch.” Months later, he released his own single “Lay Me Down” — which was also an instant hit.

Throughout 2013 and 2014, Smith lent his vocals to several other artists’ singles, including Naughty Boy’s “La La La.” However, he continued to release his own music, including the EP Nirvana and his first full-length album — which was titled In the Lonely Hour.

The following year, the 23-year-old singer was honored with four Grammy awards, including Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.

Although he quickly became a worldwide sensation, the young man’s career was threatened by an injury to his vocal chords.

While on tour in Australia, Sam Smith was diagnosed with a vocal cord hemorrhage. As the bleeding could not be stopped, the talented singer was forced to undergo surgery to repair the damage.

Following the surgery, Smith was unable to speak for three weeks. However, as he made a complete recovery, his recently began his comeback tour in the United States.

Although Sam Smith was injured in a Segway accident, and his Louisville show was cut short, the singer made it to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday for a show at Time Warner Cable Arena.

As reported by the Charlotte Observer, the show went off without a hitch and “No matter how hard he tried, Sam Smith couldn’t wipe the grin off his face.”

Sam Smith’s Segway incident and cancelled show were disappointing. However, he was happy to be back on stage Saturday night.
