Marshawn Lunch? Seattle Seahawks’ Beast Mode Keeps His Spare Chicken Wings In Interesting Place

Perhaps it’s time Seattle Seahawks’ Marshawn Lynch is given a new nickname. The quirky running back known as Beast Mode could easily be called Marshawn Lunch after he was photographed eating some chicken wings while coaching a free youth football clinic in Oakland, California. The fact that Marshawn was eating the chicken wings is not the most interesting part of this story — after all, a man called Beast Mode has to get hungry. But what does an eccentric, millionaire NFL player do with the extra wings he wants to save for later? If he’s Marshawn Lunch, he puts them in his sock, of course.

John Boyle of Seahawks.com told the bizarre story during his chronicling of Marshawn coaching the free clinic.

“At one point Lynch is delivered some chicken wings on the field and he stuffs a few extras in his socks. Yes, you read that right, for a few minutes this millionaire, Pro-Bowl running back was coaching football on a warm July afternoon with chicken wings in his socks, which he later removed and ate.”

Maxim happened to be at the camp when Lunch… Lynch stuffed the wings into his socks, and the publication stopped to ask Marshawn about it once the camp was over.

“My auntie fried up some chicken and I had my hands full, and I don’t have no pockets on my shorts, so I just had to use what I had.”

Makes sense.

In all seriousness, Marshawn’s propensity for putting his auntie’s BBQ poultry in his socks isn’t the most important thing about this story. It’s no secret that Marshawn Lynch is pretty much an either/or with football fans who either love him or hate him. It’s also no secret that “quirky” doesn’t even begin to describe the man who once admitted that “I’m just here so I don’t get fined” in the midst of the Super Bowl media circus, and then later filed a trademark for the phrase.

What needs to be highlighted is that despite how football fans feel about Marshawn Lynch on the field, off it, he is loved by the Oakland community where he grew up. This year was the ninth year in a row that Marshawn donated his time, and money — he gave away 400 pairs of cleats to kids that day — to organize and host the charity football camp for the children of Oakland. Whether you call him Lynch, or Lunch, or Beast Mode, this year alone, more than 800 children benefited from Marshawn’s generosity — quirkiness and all.
