Doritos Warning: School Bans Doritos Roulette After Girl Has Severe Breathing Problems After Challenge

“Dangerous Doritos warning” school letters have been issued to parents. The missive was penned after children and teens began taking the Doritos Roulette challenge and, in at least one case, having breathing difficulties. A description of the new chip product on the company website said, “one chip in every handful is so spicy it may bring you to tears.” and is “hotter than most of the spiciest dishes out there.”

George Pindar School sent the Doritos warning letters after Beth Laybourn, 14, suffered an asthma attack after participating in the Doritos Roulette challenge. The Scarborough school told parents not to give their children the “dangerous” spicy Doritos to school and shared details about the severe breathing problems Laybourn endured.

Beth Laybourn said she was afraid she was “going to die” after eating just a pack of the Doritos Roulette crisps. The spicy tortilla chip bag carries a warning which reads, “WARNING: Some of these chips are ultra spicy.” The teen, her younger brother, and a friend, were playing a Russian roulette type came by taking turns eating the spicy chips when the asthma attack occurred.

The Doritos Roulette chips are reportedly coated with a flavoring which measuring 78,000 units on the Scoville Heat Scale, with a super-hot Scotch Bonnet pepper.

“At first it wasn’t that hot. We carried on going round and I started sweating and a moment later I felt my throat burning,” Laybourn said during an interview with the Sun. “I started retching and ran to the toilet and was sick. I had four mugs of milk and my throat still wouldn’t stop burning. I couldn’t breathe properly and I really thought I was going to die. I kept thinking that if it leads to a full-blown asthma attack I could die.”

The George Pindar School July newsletter to parents referred to the Doritos Roulette chips as “dangerous Doritos.” Laybourn asked her mom to buy a bag of the Doritos Roulette chips after seeing a commercial for the snake that said, “There’s a hot chip in every handful. Eat another — if you dare.”

“I love hot food, I love lamb bhunas — but this was the hottest thing I have ever had. It’s the latest craze and everyone’s talking about it. But I think they are dangerous,” Beth Laybourn added. “I couldn’t stop crying. It was the worst attack I’ve ever had. It was terrifying.”

“Parents and carers, please be aware that the new Doritos Roulette crisps are not recommended for children,” the newsletter also stated. “The crisps contain extra hot chips and it has come to our attention that they can cause severe distress, particularly to those with sensitivities, allergies or breathing problems.”

“We were sorry to hear about what happened. We do warn people to expect a seriously spicy experience with Doritos Roulette and we make this clear on the pack and in adverts,” a Doritos company spokesman said when hearing about what happened to the George Pindar School student.
