Why Diane Keaton Thought Lena Dunham Was A Lesbian

Lena Dunham has made a few connections in Hollywood since her career skyrocketed in 2012 with her hit series Girls. However, this might be the most awkward celebrity sighting yet. According to Dunham, while at a Jennifer Aniston party, the Girls creator ran into actress Diane Keaton who mistook her for a lesbian. Okay, we’ll rewind on this one.

According to Dunham, who sat downduring Trainwreck’s panel, it all went down at Jennifer Aniston’s Christmas party. Dunham went as director and producer Judd Apatow’s plus one. Before Keaton mistook Dunham for a lesbian, she asked whether or not the two were on a date. We’re guessing she didn’t know that Judd Apatow is actually married to actress Leslie Mann.

Judd then said that Dunham is just a friend and is “significantly younger than me.” After that, Keaton really wanted to know more about Lena and why she was there. Dunham recounted the rest of the story with glee. Keaton then asked, “‘Do you even like men? Are you interested in men?’ It was the best thing! So Diane Keaton was just straight up like, ‘There is a lesbian and I am Diane Keaton so I don’t even need to beat around the proverbial bush. I can just let her know.'”

Dunham is not a lesbian and is actually in a steady relationship with Bleachers front man Jack Antonoff. Despite not being a lesbian (sorry, Diane Keaton!) Dunham is a very outspoken supporter of LGBT rights. In fact, back in October, she said that she refuses to marry her boyfriend until everyone has equal rights in the United States. At the time, she told Howard Stern, “We’re not against marriage, but I wanna wait. My sister is gay and it just doesn’t feel good to me to do something she can’t do.”

Back at the 2013 Golden Globes, Dunham said, “I don’t want to get married until all gay people can get married.”

So now that everyone has equal rights in terms of marriage, does this mean Lena and Jack are getting married? Not so fast.

Dunham recently wrote about the ruling, “As soon as Jack woke up, I informed him that he ‘better not make a fool out of me,’ followed by a quick ‘LOL,’ and then, ‘But seriously. I’m going to look like a real idiot if we just sit here like losers and keep dating. Then I tweeted, ‘@jackantonoff get on it, yo,’ followed by my immediate and all-consuming regret.”

She continued, “The fact is that wanting everyone to have the right to marry and wanting to be married are two very different things.”
