Disney Shanghai Theme Park Specifics Revealed: What Can Fans Expect From The New Resort?

Disney’s Shanghai theme park plans have been revealed, and many have been anxious to get the scoop on this project. The Walt Disney Company resort is slated to be the first to open on mainland China, and now people can get some idea of what themes and attractions will be incorporated, as the New York Times shared some of the details.

The Disney Shanghai resort will cost about $5.5 billion to put together, and it will cover an area of about 1.5 square miles. There will be a resort, six themed areas, two hotels, live entertainment, a theater, and naturally, there will be a castle. While the castle at Walt Disney World in Florida is an icon for the brand, it seems this Shanghai fixture will be the biggest and most interactive the parks have generated to date.

This new project has been a unique challenge for the company, as China insisted that the park reflect the country’s culture alongside the brand image. Executives have indicated that while the park will be authentic to the Disney experience, it will also be distinctively Chinese.

Many of the Disney Shanghai specifics were kept under wraps until now, though there have been some leaks here and there. There will be no Space Mountain or It’s a Small World attractions, icons at other parks. However, there will be an area focused on the Pirates of the Caribbean brand, as well a theater show of the Lion King done in Mandarin.

While the Hong Kong Disneyland park has had to work through some rough patches since it opened in 2005, the Disney Shanghai project is approaching its opening, with some adjustments in marketing and expectations. The website is already up, with a number of tantalizing teases about the features that will be incorporated, and a segment via ABC News showed some of the work in progress.

Additional areas slated to be developed include Disneytown, Treasure Cove, and Tomorrowland, and there will be 12,000 employees in the mix of things, notes GMA via Yahoo! News. In addition to the Enchanted Storybook Castle, there will be a carousel, a waterfall and mountain, and, of course, many familiar characters.

Anxious fans have been waiting for about four years to see specifics on this property, and the reveal has generated a lot of buzz. The resort is slated to open next spring, a slightly delayed target as initially the company was aiming for an early 2016 debut. Will the new Shanghai Disney become a huge success? Disney fans will be quite anxious to see how things go for the new park.
