Boston Snow Pile Melts, Leaves Behind A Massive Pile Of Trash

Boston’s snow pile, which reached historic proportions, has finally melted. Although it took nearly four months, Mayor Marty Walsh confirmed the last remaining snow is officially gone. The announcement, which was made via social media, was met with an overwhelmingly positive response.

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker responded to the announcement via Twitter with a message that stated, “Let us celebrate the #MAsnow melt, but remember that there is much work ahead to prepare the #MBTA for next winter”

During the 2104-2015 winter season, Boston’s snow totals exceeded 110 inches. As reported by CBS Boston, the brutal winter was the city’s worst in recorded history.

As the deep snow made travel nearly impossible, it was removed from the streets and transported to the Seaport District — where it became known as the South Boston snow pile. By March, the massive pile was 75-foot tall.

Although the temperatures eventually climbed into the 80s, the Boston snow pile remained intact for several months. The unusually long timeline prompted local radio and television stations to hold contests — which challenged residents to predict when the snow would finally melt.

Meteorologist Eric Fisher said the sheer volume of snow, combined with an exceptionally dry spring, contributed to the slow melting process.

As the region saw little rain between March and June, the snow simply did not wash away. Essentially, the Boston snow pile was so dense, the outer layers insulated the inner core from the elements and slowed the melting process to a crawl.

In early June, Fisher estimated the snow would be gone within two weeks. However, it was not officially melted until July 15.

Although residents are happy the snow is finally gone, the resulting pile of trash remains a concern. As reported by WMUR, the Boston snow pile contained an estimated 80 tons of waste.

A majority of the trash was collected along with the snow in residential neighborhoods. As the garbage was left at the curb and subsequently buried in the snow, the plows simply could not avoid it.

The Boston snow pile is now completely melted, and crews are working on removing the massive pile of trash.
