‘Sons of Anarchy’ Creator Kurt Sutter Takes Violence To The Next Level In FX’s New Drama ‘The Bastard Executioner’, And His Latest Offering ‘Southpaw’

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is back with his new show, The Bastard Executioner, and if the first teaser trailer is anything to go by, his fans are in for trailblazing action.

As reported by Uproxx, the half-minute trailer of The Bastard Executioner debuted during the second season premiere of the FX show The Strain, and has since gone on to receive rave reviews for its historical authenticity, production design, and swashbuckling blitzkrieg.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sons of Anarchy‘s Sutter succinctly summed up his rationale behind his new show.

“I love history. I love theology. I love blood.”

And the man who gave us perhaps the decade’s best drama in Sons of Anarchy seems true to live up to his word. Watch the trailer here.

The Bastard Executioner follows the story of a knight serving under King Edward I who, ravaged by the atrocities of war, pledges to renounce violence once and for all. But it is Sons of Anarchy‘s creator we are talking about, and in his world, violence inevitably manifests itself in the most dangerous of forms. Add chainmail, horses, swords, and beheadings into the mix, and we have a spliced up medieval drama on our plates, served with large doses of grandeur and spectacle.

“It’s been very satisfying weaving fact and fiction to create a new mythology that combines all these elements. And with this extraordinary cast—Stephen Moyer, Katey Sagal and newcomer, Lee Jones—this world explodes on screen.”

Along with the already mentioned cast of Katey Sagal (Sutter’s wife / Sons of Anarchy‘s matriarch Gemma), Stephen Moyer (True Blood), Flora Spencer-Longhurt, Lee Jones, and Sam Spruell, Sutter himself stars as The Dark Mute in all ten episodes of the first season.

FX’s John Landgraf spoke to E! Online about Sutter’s vision.

“From his important contributions to The Shield to his epic run on Sons of Anarchy, Kurt has been one of FX’s most visionary artists, and we are proud to get him back on the air so soon after the unquestionable success of Sons.”

Meanwhile, The Bastard Executioner is not the only offering by Sutter this year. During Sons of Anarchy‘s final season, Sutter penned the script of Southpaw, which is set to hit the screens come July 24. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, and Rachel McAdams in the lead roles, it is a story of a boxer who makes his way to the very top, only to find his world crumbling around him.

Sons of Anarchy fans are all geared up for the promised Sons of Anarchy prequel, but Sutter has already warned that the prequel may not even be started for the next couple of years. He has just got too many other projects on his plate for now.

So buckle up, Sons of Anarchy fans, Sutter is sure to hook you up with some taut drama and heady violence in the days to come.
