‘Once Upon A Time’ Introduces A New Heroine And Gives A Glimpse Of Dark Emma [Video]

Warning: This article may contain spoilers for Once Upon a Time.

One of the highlights at Once Upon a Time‘s Comic Con panel was the unveiling of a new character on her way to Storybrooke, giving fans of Once Upon a Time a thrill to learn that new Disney characters will be incorporated into the show.

The teaser presented at the close of the Once Upon a Time panel revealed that Merida from Disney Pixar’s Brave will be joining the cast of characters in season five of Once Upon a Time. Having just completed a run on the BBC series Atlantis, Amy Madison has been cast to play the live action version of Merida on Once Upon A Time.

The Once Upon a Time clip, much like the Brave film, shows Merida, a Scottish highlands woman, displaying her talent for archery by shooting arrows at a target and splitting the previous arrows with each new shot. It certainly seems that this new Once Upon a Time character is preparing for a war.

Another highlight, possibly the most anticipated topic for Once Upon a Time fans, was a discussion of Dark Emma and, with Jennifer Morrison on hand, there was quite a bit revealed about the changes for Emma Swan in season five of Once Upon a Time. Ms. Morrison revealed a great zest for the role of the villain, after so many seasons of being cast as the heroine.

“I’m really excited, as an actor,” the Once Upon a Time actress said. “To be able to start season five of a show doing something brand-new is so exciting. I’ve been so enjoying playing Emma and everything that comes along with it. I get to do something totally new and different…. There’s fun to the villainy.”

For those Once Upon a Time fans that doubt Morrison’s commitment to her role, Jennifer wasn’t shy about revealing all she had done to prepare for the change in her role.

“I spent the whole hiatus digging up my thoughts about it,” continued Morrison. “Emma went through a lot in her life: She had a tough childhood, she’s always tried to be the bigger person, the good person, and now that she’s tethered to the darkness, she has to face some of that … to truly overcome it, versus just repress it.”

Earlier in the summer hiatus, Ms. Morrison revealed that she worked with Once Upon a Time‘s creative team in developing Emma’s dark side by exploring the darkness in classic fairy tales.

If she had it to do over again, Morrison thinks Emma would have made the same decision, even if it had only been Regina’s life in peril.

“I think if Regina were the only person in danger, she would have made the same choice,” said Once Upon a Time‘s Morrison. “But it’s important that the darkness was threatening the whole town.”

The season premiere of Once Upon a Time will air on Sunday September 27 on ABC.
