Woman Falls Into Sidewalk Sinkhole In China [Video]


A teenage girl walking down the sidewalk in Xi’an, the capital of the China’s northwest Shaanxi Province, fell nearly 20-feet when a sinkhole opened up beneath her feet.

The incident was captured by a city surveillance camera. According to CNews, the incident occurred on March 25th. Luckily, a passing cab driver witnessed the girl falling into the sinkhole and was able to get help.

The NY Daily News reports that the cab driver, Wang Wei, climbed down into the hole to save the girl.

“I called out to her but she didn’t respond. After I shook her a little, she came to. The dirt kept showering down on us and the kid couldn’t stop crying.”

Eventually firefighters arrived on the scene and lowered a ladder for Wei and the girl to climb out. Wei said:

“The ladder didn’t seem very stable, and she kept screaming out of fear. So, I soothed her, saying that I’d follow and protect her till she climbs out of the pit.”

The Huffington Post reports that the girl failed to notice two warning cones, but the area doesn’t seem to be marked off well in the video.
