David Paterson Set To Be Next MTA Board Member

David Paterson is set to be named the next board member for Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo said in a statement on Monday that he has named his predecessor to the MTA, a position recently vacated by Nancy Shevell, who left the board after marrying Paul McCartney.

The board’s current chairman, Joseph J. Lhota has said that he is looking forward to working with Paterson, who is the former governor of New York. He also added that he has known Paterson for over 35 years. Lhota said:

“Former Governor Paterson will bring a unique and practical perspective, particularly with respect to issues affecting minority communities and disabled New Yorkers.”

Former Gov. David Paterson was surprised, but looking forward to the appointment. He said that:

“I can’t say I really ever imagined this would happen, but this governor has asked, and I’m honored. It will be quite exciting.”

Paterson’s run as governor, which lasted almost three years, was marred, and at the end, it was not surprising he was not re-elected. During that time period, Paterson was involved in several controversies, including the state’s worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

Since 2010, when his governorship ended, he has hosted a daily talk show on WOR-AM, and has also taught a college class.

Paul Steely White, executive director of advocacy group Transportation Alternatives, was looking forward to Paterson’s appointment. He commented:

“If anyone knows New Yorkers are tired of paying more for less and how to find fairer ways to invest in transit, it’s David Paterson.”

Referring to the difference between being governor for New York and being one among a panel of 23 voices, Paterson said, “I’ve been the head enough. I don’t mind being a soldier for a while.”
