Dog’s Stomach Upset Has Shocking Cause — 62 Hair Bands And Lots Of Underpants [Video]

For Black Lab Tiki, hair bands are a delicacy. Trouble is, once they hit the stomach, things get a little dicey. The hungry pooch recently learned that 62 is far too many to eat in one sitting.

Tummy troubles led his owner, Sara Weiss, to take him to the vet, where Dr. Hisham Ibrahim prescribed some medicine to settle his indigestion. The dog had no appetite and had vomiting and diarrhea, WTAE reported.

The meds didn’t help the ailing Tiki, and he went back to the vet not long after. That’s when doctors x-rayed his abdomen and found a large mass they couldn’t explain, the Associated Press added.

So they went in for a closer look, spending two hours exploring his innards to learn what exactly the mass was. And what they discovered was shocking to say the least.

A whopping 62 hair bands were hiding in his gut, among some other treasures.

“I found this hair band attached to another hair band to another one to another one and to other things again,” Ibrahim said, comparing the unnerving reveal to removing tied scarves from a hat, magician-style.

Head vet tech Emily Cottle tallied the find.

“Four rubber bands, a Band-Aid, eight pairs of underwear and 62 hair bands is a lot to be in a dog’s stomach, especially of Tiki’s size.”

Thankfully, the Labrador and his unusual palette are recovering nicely, his belly freshly emptied and ready to (hopefully) tackle proper food. Though he does have a history of munching on unusual snacks besides the more recent 62 bands. Up until this point, the most unusual thing he’d eaten was a Nerf dart.

It passed through his system the natural way.

Of course, the Lab isn’t the first pup to fill his stomach with something bizarre. Veterinary Practice News keeps a fun list of the most hilarious and unusual items dogs have eaten every year. Their 2014 list (entries for the 2015 list are now being accepted) has some real shockers.

X-rays found a shish kabob skewer in the stomach of a German Short-haired pointer named Marley; he ate the meat and vegetables too, but apparently decided to take the pilfered treat whole, skewer and all.

A Great Dane in Oregon couldn’t stop barfing after he inhaled 43 socks, which sounds like every single sock in his owners’ house. He’s doing just fine these days.

Then there’s Elvis, a mixed-breed puppy, who swallowed a fishing lure baited with chicken liver. The pup’s stomach was pierced by the hook, but fortunately docs removed it and gave him antibiotics in time. He’s recovered.

And a canine named Woof in Florida had a particularly insatiable taste for rubber ducks — he kept scooping them right out of a little boy’s bathtub. Every time a duckie went missing, his owner would buy a new one; eventually, he’d collected five in his gullet.

And finally, earlier this year, a puppy in California had to undergo surgery to remove a corn dog stick from his tummy; surely, the tantalizing residue of corn dog tempted him.

So Tiki need not feel embarrassed about his hankering for underpants and hair ties — though next time, perhaps he should snack on just one to quench his appetite, not 62.
