Ben Affleck To Write And Direct Standalone ‘Batman’ Film [Report]

Rumors have begun flying that Ben Affleck will team up with DC Comics’ chief creative officer Geoff Johns to write a script for a standalone Batman film. Not only will Ben reportedly write the script, but he will also direct and of course star in the film.

According to CNN, when Affleck signed on to play Batman, he made directing a condition of the contract. While this news might not be all that surprising, it certainly has some fans excited just thinking of the level of creativity which could come from a partnership between Affleck and Johns.

Geoff Johns has written some of DC Comics’ most memorable comic book series including Green Lantern, Aquaman, Batman, Justice League, The Flash, and Superman. Johns has also written for TV series Smallville, Arrow, The Flash, and CBS’ Supergirl.

If the rumors about Ben Affleck working on a solo Batman flick turn out to be true, the film likely won’t be out for quite some time. Affleck’s debut as Batman is set for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which hits theaters in 2016, and there’s also the Justice League movie coming out in 2017. Could a standalone Batman movie come out in 2018 then? It’s possible it could take that long.

Ben will also soon be busy with bringing his scripted adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel, Live By Night, to theaters. Ben’s work directing Live By Night begins in November. Affleck had postponed the film in order to star in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Sources say that Affleck and Geoff Johns could turn in a script for the standalone Batman film by the end of summer. When DC and Warner Bros. laid out their schedule of superhero movies, a solo Batman flick was not on that list; however, it’s said the studio had always planned on putting out one or more. It just isn’t clear when audiences would see Ben Affleck in action on his own as Batman, but the film (or films) could go well with or even boost those of the lesser-known heroes and heroines.

Ben Affleck already has plenty of experience directing and co-scripting films. Ben directed Argo, which won an Academy Award for Best Picture, and he co-scripted and directed The Town and Gone Baby Gone. What creative direction would he take Batman?

At this point, nothing is set in stone, but Variety is reporting sources have confirmed Ben is allegedly in talks to write and direct a standalone Batman movie. Warner Bros. has no comment at this time.

Do you think it’s true that Ben Affleck will work on a solo Batman film?
