New ‘Halo 5’ Warzone Map Inspired By ‘Silent Cartographer’, Debuts In Mega Blok Form

343 Industries brought Halo 5: Guardians for the Xbox One to San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, and a new Warzone map was revealed as part of it. This isn’t just any new multiplayer map reveal, though, as a massive Mega Blok model highlights inspiration from the original Halo‘s “The Silent Cartographer” mission.

The new Halo 5 Warzone map is called “Raid on Apex 7,” and is bigger than the “Escape from A.R.C.” map shown at E3 in June, according to GameSpot. The inspirations from “The Silent Cartographer” are clear, with the towering Forerunner structure that sits along a beach. The mission was a favorite in Halo: Combat Evolved, as it encapsulated some of the best of the sandbox gameplay perfectly featured in the original Xbox title.

That sandbox gameplay is what 343 Industries is trying to recreate in the Warzone multiplayer mode for Halo 5.

“Clearing out the initial Covenant threats and controlling the Forerunner Spire in the center of the island is paramount to a team’s success and provides a central base of operations,” the official description of Apex 7 reads. “If your team loses the Spire, don’t despair; players can use a system of caves or take to the beach to flank the base. Beware of the Covenant, though, for they will not let you take this island so easily. They will counterattack and fight to retake their territory. Continue the push for control of the island and take out the opposition’s core … before you awaken something much worse.”

The new Warzone map is not only playable at the Xbox Experience booth for San Diego Comic-Con attendees, but it is also featured alongside a massive 6? x 6? Mega Bloks model of “Raid on Apex 7.” It was put together by two master builders over the course of 16 weeks and uses over 89,500 blocks, plus working LED lights. The entire piece assembled weighs a half-ton.

Warzone is the new 12 versus 12 versus AI controlled enemies game mode being introduced with Halo 5. Players will battle the opposing team and enemy AI for control of key points on the map to earn REQ points and REQ levels. These, in turn, are used to acquire power weapons and vehicles that can be used in the fight.

As previously covered, weapons, vehicles, and other items in Warzone are added to a player’s inventory through REQ packs. These can be earned in-game or purchased through micro-transactions. This is how 343 Industries will support releasing all Halo 5 DLC for free.
