Woman Dies During Running Of The London Marathon

London, England – Organizers of the famed London Marathon have confirmed that a 30 year old participant died while running. According to reports the woman had collapsed on the last leg of the marathon with the end in sight.

The finish line, which is located at the mall at Buckingham Palace was within view of the runner. Runners do not reach the final leg of the run until they have completed 25 miles of the run.

The organizers of the event released the following statement,

“It is with regret that we have learned of the death of a competitor in the Virgin London Marathon.

“A 30-year-old woman collapsed at Birdcage Walk, and although immediate medical attention was provided to the casualty, the fatality was confirmed this afternoon.”The organizers of the Virgin London Marathon would like to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

“We will not be releasing any further details of this tragic incident until next of kin have been notified and formal identification has taken place. We would ask for your understanding in this matter.

“We would like to emphasize that our immediate concern is for the family of the deceased. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with them at this difficult time.”

The race, which began in 1981 has seen ten total deaths in the running. The last death was in 2007.

More than half of the fatalities have been due to undiagnosed heart conditions.

Up to 37,500 runners run through the English capitol in order to participate in the race. They also come to win their medals and raise money for countless charities.
