Russell Wilson Says He And Girlfriend Ciara Are Practicing Abstinence

Russell Wilson is determined to take things slow with Ciara, telling a megachurch audience this weekend that he and his new girlfriend have decided to abstain from sex.

In a discussion with Pastor Miles McPherson at Rock Church, Wilson said he was waiting backstage before one of Ciara’s concerts when he was struck by a revelation that they must practice abstinence.

“It was about 15 minutes before she went onstage,” Wilson said (via the Washington Post), “and she was sitting there, and God spoke to me. He said, ‘I need you to lead her.’ And I was like, ‘Really? Right now?’… He goes, ‘No, I want you and need you to lead her.’ And so I told her, right then and there, ‘What would you do if we took all that extra stuff off the table?’ Just do it Jesus’s way.”

“I knew that God had brought me into her life to bless her, and for her to bless me,” Russell continued, “and to bless so many people with the impact that she has, that I have. We’re not going to be perfect, by any means… but He’s anointed both of us. I know that He’s calling for us to do something miraculous, something special. And I told her — and she completely agreed — is the fact that, ‘Can we love each other without that?’ If you can really love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody.”

Russell Wilson and Ciara first made waves back in April, when they attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner together. They started dating soon afterward, but before long, reports indicated that they were taking a break to figure out the relationship.

A source told E! Online that they “things have gone a little rocky,” and they decided to back off a bit. It didn’t last long, and soon afterward the couple appeared to be going stronger than ever.

The break could have been a bit about timing. Both Russell Wilson and Ciara had been coming off messy breakups at the time they got together — the singer split with her fiance, rapper Future, while Wilson and his wife divorced after just two years of marriage.

While his insistence on abstinence may seem odd for an NFL player, Russell Wilson has been an open advocate of his Christian faith. But his views have also caused some controversy, including earlier this year when he admitted to seeing and enjoying the racy movie Fifty Shades of Grey.
