Boston Snow Piles: 12-Foot-High Ice Piles ‘Refuse To Melt,’ Stubborn Snow Could Stick Around All Summer

The Boston snow piles were massive this winter, towering over buildings and constantly reminding everyone that this was one of the worst winters that the city had ever seen. And while Massachusetts folk have been enjoying some high-80-degree weather today, there is still somewhat of a constant reminder that winter 2015 isn’t that much of a distant memory.

According to the New York Times, there is a sizable snow/ice/trash pile that simply refuses to melt. That pile is about 12-feet high, and is located in Boston’s Seaport district.

The Boston snow piles are getting smaller, but they are taking forever to completely melt away. According to Boston Magazine, the city has purchased two new “truck-mounted snowblowers” in hopes of being able to keep up with significant snowfall in the future. After 110 inches in the city in 2015, one might be able to understand why spending $645,000 on each unit is completely worth it.

For now, however, the sun is shining, and the snow is sitting. Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is trying to have some fun with whatever snow the city has leftover. He basically wants people to guess the date when the last bit of snow will vacate the city.

Those who wish to take a guess must tweet (@marty_walsh with hashtag #BOSMeltNow) or email their chosen date by July 15. Every spec of snow must be gone from the Tide Street lot in order for the winner(s) to be declared. If you win? You get to meet Mayor Walsh.

“This is a fun and creative way for residents to come together and make light of what was a long, challenging winter,” Walsh said. “Now that it’s summer, we can have some fun and talk about how we recovered from the historic amount of snow Boston received. I’m surprised to see that we still have unmelted snow here.”

Now, if the Boston snow piles last until the first snow of the fall of 2015, there’s no word on how the rules will change, but that’s certainly a fair guess.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, quite a few people have been making side bets on their own, but no one has won anything yet.

When do you think Boston will rid itself of the last bit of the white stuff?
