Floyd Mayweather To Lose Belt: Boxer More Concerned About A Perfect Run?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. had defeated Manny Pacquiao and conquered the World Boxing Organization 147-pound championship belt.

However, it wasn’t the only thing he had to do to hold the championship belt and failure to do so is going to cost him. Interestingly, Mayweather Jr. isn’t sweating the details, at all.

In order to retain the privilege of donning the WBO 147-Pound belt he had won fair-and-square fighting Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. had to give up World Boxing Association and WBO 154-pound belts. Apparently Mayweather even declined to pay the $200,000 sanctioning fee for the title by the deadline. Moreover, he decided against vacating the WBA and WBC junior middleweight titles, reported ThaBoxingVoice. In simple terms, a boxer cannot hold the belt in more than one weight class.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was even given a timeline to surrender the belt and that deadline has ended, with no action taken from the boxer:

This means Mayweather Jr. will be stripped of his WBO 147 lbs. championship belt for not complying with organization rules. Just to be clear, the WBO isn’t snatching the belt only to hand it over to Manny Pacquiao, but the procedure is merely to penalize Mayweather Jr. for violating organization rules. While Mayweather will certainly lose the title sooner or later, it won’t affect the boxer’s amazing 48-0 record. Hence it is amply evident that the boxer isn’t sweating over the details and has let time do all the talking, which is ironically, quite unlike him.

Mayweather recently chided Pacquiao in a weird Instagram post. The short video shows Mayweather Jr. poking fun at Pacquiao’s shoulder injury:

Needless to say, though Pacquiao was initially cordial about the unwarranted jibe, saying, “A real champion is gracious both in his words and conduct,” he couldn’t stop himself from taking a pot-shot at Mayweather’s domestic violence conviction.

“We should understand Floyd Mayweather Jr. because of his family background. He hailed from a family of ex-convicts and he himself is an ex-convict. We could not blame him because his action just showed the kind of family upbringing he had.”

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has made about $220 million from a single fight. Hence it’s unclear why he chose not to pay $200,00 and chose to retain the belt, which will undoubtedly be taken away from him anyways. What makes the scenario bizarre is the fact that after Mayweather Jr. had won the belt, he had expressed his desire to vacate the titles he won, only to back out later.
