A fireworks show malfunction during Cal Expo’s July 4 show in Sacramento, California, caused the event to be cut short. During the show, a mortar did not launch its payload properly and created two small fires. The fireworks show malfunction caused the show to be stopped ten minutes after it started. The show was supposed to last for 13 more minutes. The chief of Cal Fire’s Fire and Life Safety Division, Steve Guarino, commented on the incident.

“For some reason, the shell didn’t go up in the air. It detonated within the mortar. Instead of up, it went sideways.”

The two fires that were started by the fireworks malfunction were quickly put out by Sacramento’s Fire Department and the fireworks operator. One fire started near Cal Expo’s race track while the other started close to a horse barn.

The cost of the fireworks show was $80,000. That price tag includes fireworks and staffing for the event. Approximately 25,000 turned out to watch the largest fireworks display in the Sacramento area. Two other fireworks show malfunctions occurred during the Independence Day holiday weekend. On July 3, 2015, a fireworks show malfunction injured nine people in Avon, Colorado. Some of the fireworks did not launch properly and ended up going into the crowd of people who were watching the show. The injuries consisted of burns. No serious injuries were reported. The fireworks show lasted for 17 minutes before the accident forced the show to be stopped. Video of the fireworks show malfunction was uploaded to YouTube.

Yesterday, a fireworks show malfunction in Saginaw, Michigan, occurred when a connectivity issue was discovered. One of the big firework shells did not fire properly, and that misfire caused the modules to blow. The malfunction occurred 40 minutes into the fireworks display. The fireworks show was supposed to last for an hour. The Saginaw Area Fireworks board spent $70,000 on the show. No injuries were reported in Saginaw, and authorities made it clear that there was no danger to the public. It was estimated that close to 100,000 people were in attendance for the fireworks show in Saginaw, Michigan.

It is not uncommon for a fireworks show malfunction to occur.
