‘Spectre’: Ellie Goulding And Sam Smith Battle For The Next Bond Theme Tune

In recent weeks, speculation has been rife that either Ellie Goulding or Sam Smith will be asked to follow in Adele’s footsteps and sing the title track for the next James Bond movement. Ellie and Sam are both hot property at the moment. Goulding is rarely out of the press and Smith just keeps on racking up awards, adding a Black Entertainment Television (BET) award for best newcomer to the Grammy’s and Brit awards he has already scooped.

Whilst Smith would no doubt welcome the exposure that singing a Bond song would bring, it seems that he has already run up the white flag and conceded that Goulding will be awarded the prize. Speaking to London’s Capital FM radio, Smith denied that he was in the running and tipped Goulding for the prized slot.

“People seem to think I’m doing it but I have no idea what’s going on. I’m being deadly serious. I think I would know by now. I heard Ellie Goulding was going to do it, it’s definitely not me.”

Neither Goulding nor her representatives have made any comment about the speculation, but Ellie did reveal early this week that she has a new album in the pipeline. Goulding told Refinery 29 that a new album would drop before the end of the year, and the timing would look about right if Ellie were to include a Bond song on the release. The next Bond movie, Spectre, is due for release in November.

Goulding has already had one of the biggest selling hits of the year with a song from another movie. Ellie’s song “Love Me Like You Do” is from 50 Shades Of Grey, so Goulding is already familiar with the process that turns a movie theme song into a pop hit.

Ellie would no doubt be delighted to follow Adele as a “Bond Girl.” Adele won an Oscar for her theme tune for the last Bond movie, Skyfall, a feat that Goulding would be thrilled to duplicate. Both Smith and Goulding have the sort of soulful voices that would grace a Bond song, so it would not be too much of a stretch to imagine either of them doing it. If Smith is genuinely ruling himself out, then perhaps Goulding is now favorite to land the honor.

Spectre will be the 24th Bond movie. It stars Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Monica Bellucci, Ralph Fiennes, Léa Seydoux, and Naomie Harris, and is released on November 6.

If Ellie Goulding does sing the theme tune, she will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Tom Jones, Shirley Bassey, and Paul McCartney in doing so.
