Will Season 12 Of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Be The Last?

There are many questions over the longevity of Grey’s Anatomy. Season 11 saw the shock death of Patrick Dempsey’s Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd, and it led to many fans saying that they were done with the show. However, it was picked up for a 12th season in May, and fans instantly wondered whether this would be the last. Is there any way for the show to continue when Meredith no longer has Derek or best friend Cristina around?

There is only a handful of original characters left on the show. Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey is joined by Alex Karev and Richard Webber. The rest joined through later seasons, although many quickly became fan favorites. Out of the original characters, two have been killed off, and others have left for other projects. Season 10 saw Cristina Yang move to Switzerland, after finding out that her ex-fiancé Dr. Preston Burke had created a top center and wanted her to take it on. With so many Grey’s Anatomy original characters gone, is the show really viable?

According to Business Standard, the 12th season of Grey’s Anatomy is not the last. Paul Lee, president of ABC, has already stated this fact, after Jessica Capshaw agreed to renew her contract for another three years. While he may say this, he will have to consider the ratings over the next season to make sure the show is viable for advertisers.

International Business News has shared the news of a new series regular. Ben Warren, played by Jason George, will be taking a front position after years of being a regular guest star. He moved back to Seattle from Los Angeles to be with Miranda and to take the fifth intern position after the death of Dr. Heather Brookes in the season 10 premiere.

Grey’s Anatomy will return to screens on September 24, and there are currently many questions surrounding the future for various characters on the show. Many fans will wonder whether it is over between April and Jackson, after he made it clear he would not wait for her if she re-joined the army. There is also the question of who will become the new Chief of Surgery on Grey’s Anatomy, considering Dr. Owen Hunt made the decision to step down from the position.

There will be some fans who stick to their boycott of the show. However, many others are looking forward to the start of season 12 of Grey’s Anatomy, which is not expected to be the last.
