‘Rocket League’ And ‘Styx’ Headline July PS Plus Free Titles

PlayStation Plus subscribers will get a chance to see what some PlayStation 4 owners have been raving about during the Rocket League beta. The crazy stunt cars meets soccer mash-up headlines the July, 2015, line-up of free games along with Styx: Master of Shadows, Mousecraft, and Entwined.

Rocket League has undergone a pair of beta test periods in April and May of this year, and reactions from those that were able to test the game have been largely positive. It is essentially an amped up version of soccer featuring rocket cars and a mix of demolition derby. It features multiplayer play, both online and locally, and also features cross-platform play with the PC version of the game.

The iconic Twisted Metal ice cream truck driven by Sweet Tooth will also be featured as an unlockable for the PlayStation 4 version of Rocket League. The news that the game would be free to PS Plus owners was met with cheers in its Reddit forum.

Styx: Master of Shadows is a stealth game that was a retail release for the PS4 last October, along with the PC and Xbox One. Players control the titular character, who also happens to be the first goblin from Focus Home Interactive’s fantasy world, Of Orcs and Men.

The game received mixed reviews and currently sits at 70 on Metacritic. Reviewers enjoyed the character and stealth challenges in Styx, but knocked the title over its controls.

The other two titles being offered for the PlayStation 4 is the Lemmings, Tetris-like MouseCraft, and the rhythm game, Entwined. The former is an indie-developed darling on Steam, while the latter is an indie-like game from one of Sony’s in-house studios.

Interestingly, this is one of the shallowest PS Plus entries for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita to date. The last-gen console gets the artistic puzzle-platformer Rain, while handheld owners will receive the twin-stick shooter Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved.

The four PS4 titles, one PS3, and one PS Vita title will all be available to download for free when the PlayStation Store updates on Tuesday, July 7. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required, and costs $49.99 for a 12-month subscription. You can occasionally find one for $45 or less from different online and physical retailers.

The free games downloaded from PS Plus are available for as long as the subscription is active. When the subscription ends, so does access to any of the games downloaded.
