Demi Lovato’s ‘Cool For The Summer’ Gets Compared To Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed A Girl’

Demi Lovato’s new single, “Cool For The Summer,” has already leaked a day prior to its release, and fans have been talking about it on social media. Some even slammed the singer for copying Katy Perry and Jessie J in her new song. Even Demi’s fans, Lovatics, have noticed similarities between the new pop song and Katy and Jessie’s previous singles.

Even Direct Lyrics reported that “Cool For The Summer” gives them major Katy Perry and Jessie J vibes.

“Well, ‘Cool for the Summer’ is giving me Lana del Rey, Katy Perry, Robyn and Jessie J vibes, all at once. The song is a laidback electro-pop song where Demi sings about a very sexual summer affair. She just uses a lot of metaphors to not say the ‘S’ word.”

Lovato’s new song accidentally leaked early on Tuesday morning when her friend, Marissa Callahan, got hacked. The hackers then uploaded a copy of Lovato’s new song onto Twitter. Fans have been listening to the new single here.

Demi sings “Take me down into your paradise,” which sounds similar to Jessie J’s “Domino.” Other fans have noticed how “Cool For The Summer” sounds similar to Katy Perry’s breakout single, “I Kissed A Girl.” While there are similarities among all of these songs, Demi’s new song is not a knock-off of these singles. It’s obvious that the singer was inspired by these artists, although she didn’t directly copy them.

In the song, Demi sings about a summer fling. She hints that she has “a taste for the cherry. I just need to take a bite.” It’s obvious that Demi is talking about having a fling with another woman. In the Max Martin produced track, she whispers, “don’t tell your mother.” Those lyrics alone were enough for fans to compare Demi’s new song with Katy’s classic “I Kissed A Girl,” which took over the summer airwaves in 2008.

This is definitely a new sound for Lovato, who’s known for songs like “Heart Attack” and “Neon Lights.” Hollywood Life calls Lovato’s new song a “sexy” and “upbeat” song, which is a departure from her typical ballads and pop songs. Lovato told MTV News earlier this month that she’s going in a different direction for her next album.

“For this album, I’m making music that feels right to me. This time around, I was able to explore different sounds, and hone in on something that I’m really proud of. I’m inspired by something every day so those experiences will definitely be reflected on my next album.”

“Cool For The Summer” is Demi’s first single since her 2014 “Really Don’t Care” with Cheryl Lloyd. It’s also the first single off her upcoming fifth studio album, which still doesn’t have a title.
