A London study found that high-powered ultrasound beams are capable of destroying prostate cancer without the usual side effects associated with other treatments.
Trials, which took place in southeast England’s London and Basingstoke, discovered the possibility of annihilating tumor cells without inducing damage upon neighboring tissues.
While conventional methods of radiotherapy and surgery leave half of men impotent, the Lancet Oncology journal reports that the ultrasound beam left only 10% of those treated in the trials with impotence. Significantly better odds than conventional prostate cancer treatment methods.
Doctor Hashim Ahmed of the University College London Hospital was quoted by Sky News having said:
“We’re optimistic that men diagnosed with prostate cancer may soon be able to undergo a day-case surgical procedure, which can be safely repeated once or twice, to treat their condition with very few side effects. That could mean a significant improvement in their quality of life.”
High resolution MRI scans of the men’s prostates were used to determine the exact location of tumors. After tumor locations were mapped, doctors utilized HIFU machines to focus ultrasound waves onto a very small area, effectively heating and killing the tumor cells while leaving the delicate surrounding tissues and nerves unaffected. Nearby nerves are crucial to male sexual function and often leave men impotent when damaged.
Richard Williams was hit with HIFU machines in order to eradicate two small tumors and he was able to leave the hospital on the same day without experiencing any side effects as a result of the innovative treatment. In regards to the treatment, he was quoted having said:
“There was no incision, so there was no recovery time. I walked out of hospital the same day. It was far less trouble than having a tooth pulled. I have not had any pain anywhere.”
