Trevor Moore: Sailor Is Still Missing, Coast Guard Suspends Search

Olympic sailor Trevor Moore is still missing off the coast of Miami, Florida. However, the Coast Guard has suspended all search and rescue efforts at this time. In a combined effort with Florida Fish and Wildlife, Miami Dade Fire-Rescue, the Miami Dade Police Department, and the National Park Service, the Coast Guard searched more than 510 square nautical miles in the last three days.

According to witness reports, the 30-year-old man left the U.S. Sailing center at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. Four hours later, his abandoned vessel was located near Dinner Key Marina.

Although the boat was still running, and contained Trevor Moore’s personal belongings, the sailor was nowhere to be found.

In addition to Moore’s belongings, authorities recovered a GPS device — which recorded the vessel’s speed and route. As reported by CBS News, “the boat reduced speed by Soldier Key, south of Stiltsville, and zig zagged back to where it came from.” Authorities believe the vessel was unmanned at this time, as it appeared to be drifting.

Moore’s fiancée, Libby Patton, said she is unwilling to give up hope. As reported by 10 News, Patton said her fiance “has lots of knowledge of the water and can navigate like nobody else.”

Coach Daniel Leira confirmed Trevor Moore was an experienced sailor. However, he is unsure whether the young man followed safety protocols.

“If you’re traveling at a high rate of speed, it’s very easy to fall off unless you have a safety band, you can easily fall off the boat and the boat can keep moving if you are not on board.”

Authorities do not believe Moore was wearing a life jacket, as one was found among his personal belongings on the boat.

As reported by Associated Press, authorities and volunteers scoured Biscayne Bay for three days. Unfortunately, Trevor Moore’s whereabouts remain unknown.

On Saturday evening, Coast Guard Captain Michael Long announced search and rescue efforts were suspended — as the agencies were unable to locate the missing man.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the loved ones affected. Despite the tireless search efforts by multiple agencies and good Samaritans, we were unable to find Mr. Moore.”

In 2012, Trevor Moore competed in London’s Summer Olympics with teammate Eric Storck. Although they did not win a medal, they placed 15th in the skiff event.

Moore hoped to compete in the 2016 Summer Olympics. Unfortunately, he was forced to stop training due to an injury.

Although he was an experienced sailor, Trevor Moore’s injury and lack of safety gear may have contributed to his disappearance. The Olympic sailor’s status is unknown, but authorities are not optimistic about his chances of survival.
