‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 12 Spoilers: Is A Battle For Chief Of Surgery Coming?

Grey’s Anatomy fans will see some major changes when the series returns with Season 12 this fall. Derek Shepherd is gone, and there will be some new faces running around the hospital with both a new batch of interns and a new surgeon on staff.

There is also a spot on the leadership open. Someone will need to fill the position of Chief of Surgery next season. The finale featured Richard and Catherine fighting over his wanting Miranda Bailey to fill the position. In the end, they compromised, and they will figure out the right person for the spot when the season begins.

Entertainment Weekly teased in a new spoiler report that Catherine Avery might have her own ideas when it comes to the position. She might want April to fill the job, but will April take it if it is offered to her?

Sarah Drew talked about that possibility with EW.

“I don’t think she would have any interest in being chief. There’s so much paperwork. You get buried in the politics of the hospital. All she wants to do is get her hands dirty. She wants to be in traumatic situations, fixing and healing people. She has found herself to be a healer in a pretty dramatic way that goes beyond being a surgeon. There’s something that spiritual for her.”

April Kepner-Avery does have a lot on her plate already. At the end of Season 11, Jackson gave April an ultimatum. If she left for another tour of duty overseas, their marriage would end. A previous Inquisitr report shared Drew’s comments about the couple following the finale.

“We haven’t actually broken up. We’re left on the precipice. He’s given me an ultimatum that gives us room to figure out what’s going to happen next season. I think this is the first of many conversations. I don’t see it as a total breakup, I see it as they’re definitely in a really, really rough situation. I don’t think that it’s the nail on the coffin for them. He says if you go, we’re done, but April still has to make a choice, so that’s where—I guess—we’ll pick up next season, but [Shonda Rhimes] could make a different choice.”

Is it possible that April would consider the Chief of Surgery job in order to keep Jackson happy? Is she willing to go that far to save her marriage? If she does take the position, it would definitely upset Miranda Bailey fans. Many feel that this promotion has been coming for a long time. Bailey would not be happy if she was pushed aside again.

As for the new surgeon, Martin Henderson will join the staff at the start of Season 12. He starred in another Shonda Rhimes series, but Off the Map was canceled at the end of its first season. According to TV Line, Henderson will appear on the Grey’s Anatomy Season 12 premiere on September 24.
