Miami Marlins News: Giancarlo Stanton Suffers Broken Bone In His Hand

Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton has been diagnosed with a broken bone in his hand after an injury in the 9th inning of last night’s 7-1 loss to the Dodgers, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Stanton, 25, was in the midst of potentially his best season ever as the Marlins franchise star was batting.265 with a league leading 27 HR and 67 RBI. But with him potentially lost for an extended period of time, the Marlins will now need to examine their next course of action.

For starters, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com is reporting that Stanton is currently suffering swelling in his hand. The team is not sure as to the severity of his injury, but he will likely be sidelined for a while.

The team currently sits in 4th place in the NL East with a dreadful record of 30-45, 11 1/2 games back of the first place Washington Nationals. In an offseason in which the team acquired the likes of Dee Gordon, Dan Haren, Mat Latos, Martin Prado, Michael Morse, Ichiro Suzuki, and extended the aforementioned Stanton to a record breaking 13-year, $325 million contract, the Marlins were expected to be one of the top teams in the league.

But with Stanton’s injury being what it is, Rosenthal speculates that this might mark the beginning of the team becoming full-fledged sellers at the trade deadline. Not only are the Marlins 15 games back of.500, but they are currently mired in a five-game losing streak.

Rosenthal notes that Haren and Latos would be the Marlins likeliest trade chips.

The Inquisitr reported mere hours before his broken hand diagnosis that Stanton was headed for X-rays, and that another serious injury would cause a fourth straight season in which Stanton needed a DL stint. That will likely prove to be exactly the case as the Marlins have yet to announce a roster move.

One thing the Marlins will have to monitor is how the break in his hand heals. Being a home run hitter, Stanton’s arms and hands are his bread and butter. Therefore, if he has any setbacks, he might struggle to post the prolific home run totals that the league is accustomed to seeing.
