Scarlett Johansson’s ‘Lucy’ Is Getting A Sequel

Scarlett Johansson might reprise the role of Lucy. CineEurope’s 2015 convention announced that Lucy is getting a sequel.

In case you aren’t familiar, the cerebral sci-fi action film followed a girl named Lucy who gets special powers after being exposed to a powerful drug. This isn’t your regular superhero movie. In fact, Johansson doesn’t even have an official costume, but she did kick some major butt in the film, which reflected in the box office. Lucy wowed audiences and took in a total of $458,863,600.

The official synopsis of Lucy is as follows.

“From La Femme Nikita and The Professional to The Fifth Element, writer/director Luc Besson has created some of the toughest, most memorable female action heroes in cinematic history. Now, Besson directs Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, an action-thriller that tracks a woman accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.”

Lucy got a 66 percent on the Rotten Tomatoes scale, but some critics appreciated the outside the box nature of the film.

The Irish Independent said of the film at the time, “Lucy is a brash, breezy and breathlessly paced thriller, with a high-concept plot that falls apart the moment you start thinking about it. But Besson’s camera moves so fast that you rarely get the chance, and the director is also blessed with a charismatic leading lady who’s currently at the top of her game.”

Meanwhile, Games Radar said, “Besson is at his b—s-out bonkers best in this genre-scrambling, mind-expanding exhilarator. Find it on the biggest screen available and just say ‘Yes.'”

While it’s not a sure thing whether or not Scarlett will reprise the role of Lucy, it seems like she enjoyed embodying the powerful character at the time.

In an interview with Vulture, she explained what appealed to her the role.

“As I know myself better — as I get older — I don’t have to relate all of my work to my own experience, necessarily. It’s not as important to me to be able to have a total relationship with the character I’m playing.”

Johansson continued, “I’m more interested in why people are the way they are and how they do things — how they communicate their experience. In my mind, if I can stretch my reach that far, I can work backwards from there. And then maybe have a greater understanding of my work.”
