Trump Says Mexicans Are ‘Bringing Drugs, They’re Bringing Crime, They’re Rapists’: J Balvin Appalled, Univision Cancels Contract [Video]

Donald Trump certainly lost some fans this week when recording artist J Balvin and television mega giant Univision alike took a stand against Trump after the presidential hopeful made comments that many perceive as racist. Univision, which caters largely to the Latino community, and J Balvin, who hails from Colombia, both will cancel any affiliation with the Miss USA contest, which airs live on NBC on July 12.

“It was going to be my first performance on national [mainstream] television,” J Balvin said in an exclusive interview with music magazine Billboard from his home in Medellín, Colombia.

He talked with the magazine about his decision to cancel his performance.

“We’re talking about our roots, our culture, our values,” Balvin said, referring to his plans to cancel his performance at the Miss USA pageant. “This isn’t about being punitive, but about showing leadership through social responsibility. His comments weren’t just about Mexicans, but about all Latins in general.”

Balvin made the decision to cancel his performance after Trump made comments about the Mexican community, which many people are viewing as blatantly racist, Balvin included.

In a June 16 speech announcing his presidential campaign, Trump said, “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re sending people that have lots of problems… they’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people,” reports the New York Daily News.

In response to Trump’s comments, Univision Communications, which airs television shows that cater mostly to the Latino community, decided to cancel its contract with the Miss Universe Organization. Miss Universe is jointly owned between Trump and NBC Universal, which also produces the Miss USA pageant.

“Today, the entertainment division of Univision Communications Inc. announced that it is ending the company’s business relationship with the Miss Universe Organization, which is part-owned by Donald J. Trump, based on his recent, insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants,” the network said in a statement provided to the Daily News on Thursday.

“As Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country. We will not be airing the Miss USA pageant on July 12th or working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization” the statement read, according to the New York Daily News.

Trump responded to the television giant’s decision to cancel its contract to air the Miss USA pageant on Twitter, posting that the company “wants to back out of signed @MissUniverse contract because I exposed the terrible trade deals that the U.S. makes with Mexico.” He did not comment about J Balvin’s decision to not perform.
