Pregnant Mom Teri Cumlin Allegedly Got A Shocking Ultimatum From Her Boss

Teri Cumlin, a pregnant charity worker, has just won a settlement of around $18,800 in a Glasgow employment tribunal from her now-former employer, Engage Fundraising.

According to the mom, her manager, Mark Robertson, chose to fire her after she wouldn’t comply with the shocking ultimatum that he gave her.

Just what did he allegedly say?

“If you want a career, then I’d advise you terminate your baby,” according to the reports that resulted in Cumlin’s win.

The 22-year-old had been pregnant once before, but the child was stillborn. She also has a 4-year-old daughter named Tierney.

When she told him she planned on keeping the baby, the reaction wasn’t what any employee would expect from their boss, she indicated.

“He started shouting in my face, telling me how stupid I was and that they wouldn’t be able to keep me on. It was awful,” she said.

The Mirror U.K., referencing the allegations of Teri Cumlin, reported that Robertson (pictured to the right of Cumlin in the above image) routinely sent her home without pay, gave her shifts later than her co-workers so he could publicly ridicule her when she showed up late, denied requests she had made to stand in the shade when temperatures rose too high, and used other opportunities to berate her for being pregnant.

In a separate report from the Herald Scotland, Teri Cumlin shared some more details about some of her alleged encounters with Robertson.

“He said to me ‘do you want to be that girl from Maryhill with babies to different dads?’ and then it was ‘if you want a career than I’d advise you to terminate your baby.’ ”

“I said ‘I’m not going to have a termination.’ I explained that I had had a stillborn previously and there was no way I was having an abortion. I was crying in the street and he told me I was making myself cry. He said it was all my fault.”

She also noted that she was criticized “for taking too many toilet breaks” and said he asked her “not to drink so much.”

Robertson, for his part, has not responded to the allegations, and Engage Fundraising says they plan to appeal the decision, adding that they were “unaware” of the tribunal.

Do you think the experience of Teri Cumlin is unique to her part of the world, or do most employers fail to respect a woman’s pregnancy? Sound off in the comments section.
