‘Total War’ Titles Free On Steam This Weekend, Legacy ‘Total War’ Games Released Also

If you’ve ever been interested in trying out the Total War franchise, this weekend is a great time to start. Through Monday, Creative Assembly has partnered with Steam to allow fans to try out the Total War catalog for free. Also, if you choose to buy the games, they are on sale, as well.

Titles such as Total War: Attila, Total War: Rome II, and considered to be one of the best in the fifteen-year franchise, Total War: Shogun 2, are now available for Steam users to play, with no in-game restrictions, free today. This would give players a great starting point for those who have been looking into starting up one of gaming’s best, most realistic war sims without fronting the cost if you didn’t like the title.

Total War saved face recently when they launched Total War: Attila earlier this year. Essentially treated like a stand-alone expansion to Total War: Rome II, the game received relatively good reviews, considering the release wasn’t plagued with the bugs and issues Rome II endured a year before.

Also released on Steam today are two of the franchises oldest, but most well-regarded, games in the catalog: Shogun: Total War and Medieval: Total War. Shogun was a pivotal game of its time, one of the first strategy games to combine a real-time battle mechanic along with the campaign map strategy. Total War: Shogun also paved the way for games to feature thousands of individual sprites on screen, a feat in terms of game technology at the time, which is something the Total War games have been known for since.

Until now, the only way to play the older Total War games was to emulate an older version of Windows (or simply not upgrade Windows). With the games being released on Steam, Total War fans can relive those old battles, which set the bar for real-time strategy games for the next decade and a half.

Also available today is a new DLC pack for Total War: Attila. Titled “The Last Roman,” this campaign pack adds an huge new campaign map, five new playable factions with unique units, a new story-driven campaign, as well as a new “Expedition” faction with new gameplay features. The campaign pack is priced at $14.99 on Steam.
