Gonzalo Jara Inserted Finger Into Edison Cavani To Get Uruguayan Sent-Off, Chile Defender Banned From Copa America

Chile’s Gonzalo Jara went to great lengths to get Uruguay’s Edison Cavani sent-off during their Copa America quarter final on Wednesday. In fact, the defender was so intent on getting the forward dismissed that he decided to shove his finger up Cavani’s anus.

As you can probably imagine, Cavani didn’t take too kindly to Jara’s over-zealous defensive approach, and he retaliated by hitting the face of the defender. This resulted in him being shown a red-card. You can check out a video of the entire incident as it unfolded below.

Various internet users soon showed leniency to Cavani, as they insisted that they probably would have had the same response if Jara had tried such a maneuver on them. Even a reddit thread soon appeared that admonished Java and forgave Cavani.

And it turns out that Jara, who currently plays for Germany’s Mainz 05, but has previously lined up for West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest, might have a pretty good reason to regret his actions, too.

That’s because he has now been banned from the rest of the Copa America for his violation. Juan Arango, a South American journalist, was the first to confirm that Jara had been suspended for his actions, taking to Twitter to reveal the news.

In the end, Chile were able to beat Uruguay by one goal to nil. The hosts secured their victory after Mauricio Isla scored with just 8 minutes left as he fired home from 16 yards. This came after Cavani was sent-off, while Uruguay’s Jorge Fucile was also sent-off in the closing stages to leave his team with just 9 men.

What made Cavani’s red-card even more heart-breaking was that it came just a few days after his father had been involved in a fatal car crash. The Daily Mail have reported that Luis Cavani was arrested earlier this week after he knocked down and killed a 19-year-old motorcyclist on Monday.

Chile will now progress to the semi-finals of the competition, where they will face the winner of Friday’s match between Peru and Bolivia.
