Matt Cage Comes Out: Pro Wrestler Announces He’s Gay On Facebook

Pro wrestler “Money” Matt Cage has officially come out of the closet. The announcement came on his Facebook page June 18, and could be the biggest shock to fans of the sport since the death of Randy Savage.

Professional wrestling is known to be a macho sport, where any sign of having a soft side could easily damage your reputation and make you the hated underdog. This may be the perfect time for Matt Cage, whose real name is Matt Hullum, to make the revelation, though, since tolerance toward LGBTQ groups has grown significantly over the past few years.

We can probably thank openly gay Star Trek alum George Takei for making homosexuality a new norm in the public media.

The post in which professional wrestler Matt Cage came out as gay took some courage, though.

“This one is gonna be kinda long and kinda personal and very real.

One of the biggest fears in my life has been rejection…. I was never really rejected by anyone that I hung out with in one clique for hanging out with people in another, yet I always feared being rejected. But as I’ve grown older and continued down the road of adulthood, I have discovered that I truly don’t care as much about rejection anymore. And I why should I? My friends will like me for me, flaws and all. My family will love me for me. My peers will respect me for my work. And complete strangers can think whatever they want, because they’re strangers and they don’t know me.

That being said, it makes it much easier to post here publicly that I’m gay.”

After the revelation of Matt Cage coming out, he continued to give some backstory to his decision, stating that he’d privately told others he was bisexual and wasn’t looking for a girlfriend at the time. He claims people had suspected the truth for a long time, and he had been depressed for years, feeling unable to reveal what only his closest friends and family knew.

“Originally, I never intended to make a public post about my private life. I feel that private matters should stay just that. However, with the constant speculation and discussion behind my back about a matter that could easily be brought to my face, I felt that it would just be best if I silence everyone and told the truth publicly.”

Could Matt Cage coming out as gay be damaging to his career as a wrestler, or has he gained a new level of respect from his fans?
