Marvel Studios Pres. Kevin Feige Finally Explains Just Why Marvel Is Skipping SD Comic-Con

Marvel Studios has been faithfully wooing fans at the famous San Diego Comic-Con, but the Inquisitr reported earlier this month that Marvel was, in fact, skipping this year. Much to the chagrin of Marvel fans, they would not be visiting SD Comic-Con. At the time, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige had been notably silent about dropping out.

This led to many speculations, and Warner Bros./DC Comics capitalized on Marvel’s absence. Comicbook.com now reports that Marvel Studios Pres. Kevin Feige has come out from the comic silence and explained why the comic book giant’s departure from the famed SD Comic-Con.

“It was just timing. We had done that [media] event in October, when we announced so much. Everyone knows what we’re doing over the next few years. I really have a belief: If you can’t go to Comic-Con and over deliver, then don’t go.”

In October, Marvel dropped its 2016 to 2019 timeline of films, which included Captain America: Civil War, The Inhumans, and everything in between. As such, there really was not much more for Marvel to introduce, at least nothing major. However, Marvel’s newest and next Spider-man, Tom Holland, has been namedropped after Andrew Garfield’s franchise tanked following its second outing.

Marvel and Feige certainly could have announced Holland’s last-second arrival in the next Captain America movie, but with “go big or go home” mantra as an explanation, it comes as no surprise that they skipped the SD Comic-Con. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Pres. Kevin Feige touched on the lack of a new Spider-man announcement and Marvel’s decision to lead their three-year hike into their cinematic universe.

“Spider-Man wasn’t part of that announcement when we made it in October. So there’s always room to shift. But since we shifted the release dates a couple of months ago when the Sony agreement was announced, that’s the plan we’re very much headed toward, with Civil War being the first part of that.”

Many theories were expressed as to why Marvel Studios seemingly ditched the SD Comic-Con, but the one theory that turned out to be true was simple: Marvel had nothing major to bring to the table. Warner Bros. has taken over their space and likely has big plans to fill the void left by their rival, especially considering Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Justice League Part One are coming out in the next few years.

What are your thoughts? Was this a wise decision on Marvel Studio’s part, or should they have cooked something up for fans anyways?
