The Dalai Lama Heads To Glastonbury: What Advice Will Kanye West Have For The Holy Man From Tibet?

His Holiness the Dalai Lama will make a special pilgrimage to Glastonbury this weekend as part of the Tibetan holy man’s four day visit to the UK, prompting huge speculation that the 14th Dalai Lama might hook up with Pyramid stage headliner Kanye West for an overpriced burger or two and a casual discussion on the nature of Western existentialism and materialism.

Glastonbury’s corporate clout and craven drive for ever increasing profit has long been hidden by a flimsy facade of earthly spirituality that fools only the most air-headed dim wit.

The majority of punters flock to Glastonbury to watch multi-millionaire dots on the horizon playing music, as they shun personal hygiene like the plague and get a little “messed up” in the mud. Yet some still find it “nice” and rather twee to pretend there’s something intensely meaningful about hijacking a cow’s field for the weekend and desecrating it with all the flotsam and jetsam of modern life before heading back to “civilization.”

Pretension posturing as earthly spirituality is the tipple of choice at Glastonbury. It helps block out the vauge feelings of misanthropy and claustrophobia that such large gatherings entail. As such, the 14th Dalai Lama will be welcomed with open arms by the Eavis faithful.

When Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis explained to The Guardian in 2011 that Glastonbury “Has probably got another three or four years but it’s on the way out,” fingers were crossed, and a collective sigh of relief was breathed. But Glastonbury’s muddy fields and even muddier mythology have prevailed, and now even the Dalai Lama wants in on the action.

Business Insider reports that Emily Eavis, daughter of Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis, called the coming of the Dalai Lama a great honour.

“We’re honoured to welcome the Dalai Lama to Glastonbury 2015. He will be talking in the Green Fields and exploring the farm this Sunday as part of his trip to the UK. What a special moment for the Festival!”

Close your eyes for a second and you can almost smell all those makeshift stalls selling “I love the Dalai Lama” t-shirts.

Chonpel Tsering, a representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, is also excited about the visit.

“This upcoming visit by His Holiness the Dalai Lama will be particularly notable as it takes place just a week before His Holiness turns 80 on 6 July 2015.

“The visit will offer all those attending the events, and beyond, an opportunity to hear the message of compassion, hope, dialogue and tolerance of this widely respected spiritual and moral authority.”

Yet what everyone really wants to know is, will the Dalai Lama get a chance to hook up with Kanye West and shoot the breeze over a few beers?

Both West and the Dalai Lama are unexpected guests at this year’s Glastonbury, and both men have a profound and philosophical take on the world.

Will these two “heads” get together for a spontaneous brain-storming session on how best to remedy the ills of Western civilisation? Perhaps Kim will also bake some cakes for the Dalai Lama.

Who knows! Maybe if the Dalai Lama does meet Kanye West at Glastonbury and says something along the following lines.

“I don’t know whether the universe, with its countless galaxies, stars and planets, has a deeper meaning or not, but at the very least, it is clear that we humans who live on this earth face the task of making a happy life for ourselves. Therefore, it is important to discover what will bring about the greatest degree of happiness.”

Will West meet the Dalai Lama’s philosophical meanderings with a little gem of his own such as.

“Humbly, I would say I’m the most influential person in footwear right now…I’ll say, ‘truthfully.'”

One can only speculate. But Kanye and the 14th Dalai Lama would do well to remember what happens in Glastonbury stays in Glastonbury. The last things the world needs right now is a West/Lama collaboration.
