Nursing Home Abuse: Watch What Caregivers Allegedly Do To A Disabled Man, It’s Despicable

A group of so-called caregivers allegedly did the unthinkable to a disabled nursing home patient, and it was all caught on surveillance camera.

The actions of a trio of nursing home employees was captured by cameras placed inside the facility, and they show the despicable nature of their treatment of a defenseless, powerless man. The New York Daily News obtained footage showing one of the accused individuals dragging the patient across the floor and at least one other worker not doing anything to stop the atrocious actions.

Nurses Funmilol Taiwo, 34, and Eshe Agbonkpolor, 39, and health aide Emmanuael Ufot, 36, were arrested on Wednesday for the way in which they treated a disabled, 51-year-old nursing home male patient, according to authorities. The disturbing incident took place on October 23, 2014 at the Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Queens, New York — a 200-bed facility.

Officials say that abused man suffers from mental and physical disabilities and was unable to speak up or defend himself. He allegedly fell on his back in the hallway and nobody assisted him.

In the video, Ufot is allegedly seen putting on rubber gloves, grabbing the victim by his arm, and dragging him back into his room. About half an hour later, the nursing home patient is seen leaving his room, bleeding from his head and jaw, according to investigators.

The upsetting video shows how the disabled nursing home patient is laying on the floor, clearly struggling, as he tries to get to his feet. His torn hospital gown is bloodied and bunched around his neck. A few feet away, Taiwo and Agbonkpolor seemed to ignore the patient for the next 20-minutes, police says.

Utof appears again, and this time, he grabs the nursing home patient by his gown and attempts to drag him back to his room, disregarding the obvious injuries. Sources say the unnamed victim suffered from head and neck injuries and was taken to the hospital where he received emergency treatment.

The office of the State Attorney General, Eric Schneiderman, is investigating the troubling incident and put out a statement regarding the suspects.

“My office will not tolerate nurses who callously fail to treat or endanger injured patients under their care.”

“Caregivers must know that we will vigorously prosecute behavior that endangers our most vulnerable citizen.”

Agbonkpolor’s attorney, Victor Knapp, said they are not sure if the video will back up the accusations against his client. The trio was arraigned on felony charges of endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person and willful violation of health laws.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and were released on their own recognizance following their arraignment at Queens Criminal Court, the Daily News reports. Additionally, all of them resigned or were fired from their job at the nursing home.

The administrator at nursing home facility, Elliot Norman, released a statement, according to ABC 7 which reads in part.

“Peninsula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has a zero tolerance toward any type of misconduct, abusive or negligent behavior by staff toward patients.”

“As part of our established protocol, we review these tapes on a daily basis, and it was through this review process that we discovered the alleged inappropriate activity by three former employees. We immediately provided the surveillance footage to the New York State Attorney General’s office and terminated the employees.”
