‘Batman: Arkham Knight’: Get A Better Batmobile Experience With One Option Change

The Batmobile is a huge part of the Batman: Arkham Knight experience. The vehicle’s handling can be frustrating for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC out of the box, though. That can be solved with one simple option change in the menus.

The default setup for the Batmobile in Batman: Arkham Knight is acceleration mapped to the right trigger. This is the standard with car controls in modern games. However, the ability to brake and go in reverse is mapped to the “X” or “Square” button on the Xbox One and PS4, respectively, as seen below. These would usually be mapped to the left trigger, but that is used to enter “Battle Mode.” Worse, the left trigger must be held down during fights to stay in “Battle Mode.” This can become wearing on the fingers, but is easily solved.

To change the controls, press the menu button on the controller and go to the “Game Options” screen. There you will see an option called “Battle Mode Toggle.” The default is set to off, so you’ll want to select it to turn it on.

Note, though, that the “Battle Mode Toggle” option will only show up after completing the first Batmobile challenge. It’s not very far into the game, so it is pretty easy to unlock.

Once the “Battle Mode Toggle” is turned to on, your controls should look like this.

Reverse is now mapped to the left trigger, while “X” / “Square” is still the brake button. The left trigger still acts like a brake, though. The best news is that you can now toggle in and out of “Battle Mode” with the right bumper button. This keeps you from being forced to hold down a trigger the entire time you are trying to fight a horde of the Arkham Knight’s drone tanks and soldiers.

Tooling around in the game last night revealed that it was better with the toggle turned on than off. Other players on reddit echoed that sentiment.

It’s a shame that more control options weren’t added to Batman: Arkham Knight, but that’s par for the course with most console-driven games.

As an update for PC owners with Batman: Arkham Knight, there has been no update on when a patch for the game will be released to fix the current performance issues. Rocksteady Studios is recommending that PC players use low textures with the minimum required specs and normal textures with the recommended specs. It also helps to have the game installed on a SSD hard drive, and don’t tweak the INI file settings for now.
