Dick Van Patten Dead: ‘Eight Is Enough’ Actor Passes Away, Aged 86

American actor Dick Van Patten has died at the age of 86-years-old in Santa Monica, California.

A spokesman for the family released a statement on Tuesday, via EW, that explained, “I am sorry to report this sad news. His family will not be doing any press at this time.” At this point, the cause of Van Patten’s death is still unknown. Back in January, 2006, Van Patten suffered a diabetic stroke, but made a full recovery.

Dick Van Patten was one of the most respected comedic actors in television history. Van Patten’s most prominent role came in Eight Is Enough, where between 1977 and 1981, he starred as Tom Bradford.

Born in Kew Gardens, New York, Van Patten actually began acting on stage at the tender age of 7-years-old, where he debuted on Broadway. During his formative years, he repeatedly appeared on the stage, and he formed a very impressive stage career.

Subsequently, he moved to Hollywood, which is when he started to get parts in both television and film. He landed a part in television’s Mama in 1948, while he also made appearances in Sanford and Son, Arrested Development, and Happy Days.

However, his work wasn’t just restricted to television, as he also starred in a variety of films too, most notably with Mel Brooks.

Dick Van Patten featured in High Anxiety, Spaceballs, and Robin Hood: Men In Tights, each of which were directed by Brooks, while he also made cameos in a variety of Weird Al Yankovic music videos.

Van Patten also worked tirelessly to help animals throughout his life, and he co-founded Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet Foods in 1989, while he also tried to raise money and awareness for non-profit guide dog schools in the U.S.

Dick Van Patten is survived by Pat Van Patten, his wife of 61-years, and their three children, Nels, Jimmy, and Vincent.
