Super Skinny Jeans Dangerous? Woman Hospitalized Over Tight Jeans

Are super skinny jeans dangerous? Who would have thought that wedging your legs into a very cramped and constricting space for hours on end could potentially be unsafe, but one woman’s skinny jeans were apparently so tight that she ended up in the hospital after squatting in those tight jeans for too long.

In a related report by the Inquisitr, you might be surprised by studies on beer’s health benefits.

Now, doctors do not say we should be calling all skinny jeans dangerous. The unidentified 35-year-old Australian woman spent several long hours squatting in her tight jeans while emptying cupboards while helping a friend move. While walking home, her feet were numb from the experience and she began to trip and fall.

“As she was walking, she was having trouble lifting her feet and it got so bad she eventually fell and was unable to get up again,” said Dr. Thomas Kimber of the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia.

Worse, the poor woman spent hours lying on the ground in the dark before anyone noticed she was injured by her dangerous skinny jeans. She eventually was forced to crawl along the ground and hail a cab to take her to the hospital.

Royal Adelaide Hospital doctors found she had damaged muscle and nerve fibres in her lower legs. The tight jeans had reduced the blood supply to her leg muscles, causing them to swell and compress nearby nerves.

“When she arrived, she had massive, really severe, swelling of both calves to the extent we were unable to take her jeans off without cutting them,” said Dr. Kimber. “She couldn’t move her ankles or toes properly and had lost feeling in her lower legs and feet.”

Dr. Kimber does not call skinny jeans dangerous, but he does say the case is a cautionary tale. He says anyone needing to squat for long hours should wear loose clothing.

“It is well recognised that squatting for long periods of time, regardless of what you are wearing, can occasionally cause compression of the peroneal nerve, which is at the knee,” he said, according to the Australian. “But this is the first case we are aware of where there has been such severe calf muscle swelling and such involvement of the two main nerves, the peroneal and the tibial.”

This tale of the dangerous skinny jeans was reported in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. As always, common sense trumps fashion when it comes to your health.
