What Do ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘The Walking Dead,’ And ‘Image Comics’ All Have In Common?

David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) are set to star in the upcoming Image Comics animated movie, Chew. The part David Tennant will be voicing was originally set to be cast to Robin Williams before his suicide last year.

Chew is a popular comic series from Image Comics and fans are eager to see it on the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chew is based in a world where “bird meats are illegal after bird flu killed millions of Americans.” Police officer, Tony Chu, is a character who gets psychic impressions from the foods he eats.

“Tony Chu is a cop with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. It’s a dirty job, and Tony has to eat terrible things in the name of justice. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the government has figured out Tony Chu’s secret. They have plans for him, whether he likes it or not. Presenting a twisted new series about cops, crooks, cooks, cannibals and clairvoyants, written by John Layman (Marvel Zombies vs. Army of Darkness, House of M: Fantastic Four and Puffed) with mind-blowing art by astonishing comics newcomer Rob Guillory.”

Steven Yeun will voice the lead role of Tony Chu in Image Comic’s Chew and has already recorded his part last year. While negotiations were still underway with Robin Williams’ Chew role when he committed suicide last year, it was anticipated Williams – himself an avid comic book reader and fan of Chew – would voice the part of Mason Savoy, a villain that was once the mentor of Chu. This role has now gone to David Tennant. Also starring in Chew will be Felicia Day (Supernatural) as Amelia Mintz, the love interest to Tony Chu and a food critic who is so good at her job, readers actually feel like they are tasting the food she is reviewing. Good when the restaurant is of 5 star quality, not so great when she reviews a terrible establishment though.

Chew is directed by Jeff Krelitz as well as producing alongsideDavid Boxenbaum. Original Chew creators, Rob Guillory and John Layman are listed as writers for the animated movie. As yet, there has been no release date for Chew.
