‘Destiny’ Down For Maintenance Monday, Up To Six Hours Of Downtime
Destiny players hoping to get some time in with the game on Monday, June 22, will have to deal with some downtime. Bungie is bringing the servers for the PlayStation and Xbox online shooter down for maintenance.
The Destiny servers will go down at 11 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. P.T. and will be down for up to six hours. This will affect fans of the game in Europe and kids that are home for the summer in North America, but those with day jobs will largely not be impacted.
Reminder that Destiny will be going offline today around 8AM PDT. This downtime will last up to 6 hours. Standby for updates.

The reason for the downtime has not been announced yet. However, there have been a number of instances where Destiny players on PlayStation and Xbox consoles have had trouble logging in over the past few weeks. This has been a frequent enough problem that it’s likely being addressed with a server side update and not a client update.
Naturally, there is some speculation in the community that this could be part of the preparation for The Taken King expansion. It’s possible, but the expansion is also not due out until September. We’ll have to wait for official patch notes from Bungie, if there are any, and also the results of the data miners who love to dig into the game’s back-end data to unearth unannounced goodies.
Update: Bungie provided the following Tweet just after this article was published.
The work we’re doing today will lay the groundwork for future updates. Your player experience will not change.

So, this is either work being done for the next Destiny update (likely 1.3 or 1.4), The Taken King, or both.

The Destiny downtime today will be felt the most by Trials of Osiris players. The competitive multiplayer mode only runs from Friday to early Tuesday morning. Six hours of downtime on the final day will put a crimp in the plans of those that are trying to go 9-0 and reach the Lighthouse for the sweet loot.
In preparation for maintenance today, Trials of Osiris will be temporarily disabled. It will be re-enabled once maintenance is complete.

There’s no word on extending Trials of Osiris this week due to the downtime, and it seems unlikely. Destiny players will have until the weekly reset kicks in at 5 a.m. ET / 2 a.m. PT to finish out their Trials passage.
