Ed Sheeran Says Hosting MMVAs Was His Idea: He’s Been Asking For Years

Ed Sheeran has been all over the place during his North American tour. Not only has Sheeran been doing shows almost nightly in both the United States and Canada, but he’s also been giving speeches, making appearances and doing tons of interviews. In between all of that, Sheeran has managed to make time to surprise fans at malls and weddings.

On Sunday, Sheeran will appear somewhere else: as co-host of the MuchMusic Video Awards, an idea that was all his own, Sheeran told the Toronto Sun.

“Every year I’ve gone to the MMVAs; and every year I’ve had a lot of fun and kind of ended up drinking and kind of hosting anyway. So, yeah, each year I’ve asked them, ‘Let me host it?’ Each year they’ve said no, and finally they said, ‘Yes.'”

The MMVAs has been called an “unconventional awards show” that takes place at Much’s headquarters in Toronto, Ontario. The awards show takes place at the street level and is scheduled to be simulcast on several stations and websites, including Much, CTV, CTV Two, MTV, MTV2, M3, Much.com, and CTV GO.

Sheeran, who has taken time out of his busy schedule to co-host the awards show, told the Toronto Sun that he’s happy to give back to fans in Canada.

“Canada was the first place outside of Europe to embrace me and it’s been really, really, really good.”

After all, it wasn’t long ago that Sheeran, 24, was just a normal guy himself. That’s all changed of late as Sheeran hangs out with stars such as Taylor Swift, Jay-Z, and Beyoncé, which Sheeran said “makes him nervous.” However, Ed is doing everything he can to stay grounded and be himself — both musically and in his everyday life.

When it comes to his music, Sheeran is certain he’s remained the same, he told the Toronto Sun.

“I’ve been doing what I’ve always been doing in intimate venues, and now it’s just on a bigger stage. So I guess it just carries. I think it works because it is a solo show and there’s only one person the audience can focus on.”

Sheeran is currently touring and promoting his most recent album, called x. In between, he’s doing all sorts of appearances such as the co-hosting gig on Sunday evening. Sheeran will co-host with Liz Trinnear, who is an ETALK host and former Much VJ.
