What The ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’ Trailer Didn’t Show: Po Meets Future Girlfriend, Reunites With Family, And Finds New Villain

The Kung Fu Panda 3 trailer is finally out, making January, 2016 the date will hit theaters worldwide. But apart from the new Kung Fu Panda 3 trailer released this week, Dreamworks Animation released several stills from the official Kung Fu Panda 3 movie, teasing the upcoming reunion between Po and his family.

Po and his dad, Li, encounter each other by chance and exchange a few lines regarding their years-long search for their kin—this much we know from the Kung Fu Panda 3 trailer. Li reveals that he is looking for his long-lost son and Po, in turn, reveals that he is looking for his biological father. Their likeness is uncanny and the crowd in the trailer goes silent in anxiety, waiting for the big “Luke, I am your father” moment. But as we know from the previous Kung Fu Panda movies, being smart is not one of Po’s strong suits and it seems that he got this from his father. At the end of the Kung Fu Panda trailer, we see Po and Li bid each other luck and go their separate ways.

Despite this genius moment between the father and son, Kung Fu Panda 3 actually witnesses the reunion of Po with his family. Teased in the ending of Kung Fu Panda 2, Po finds the rest of his Panda family and the snapshots revealed by Dreamworks confirm this.

Jack Black, the voice behind Kung Fu Panda‘s Po, is ecstatic as well about the reunion of the Panda family.

“There’s intense rejoicing, I’m reunited with my people.”

Apart from the long-due reunion of Po and his biological family, another panda will be making quite an entrance in Kung Fu Panda 3. Although she is not shown in the trailer, a girl panda will be occupying Po’s eyes in the new film. Voiced by Pitch Perfect acress Rebel Wilson, Mei Mei will make her debut in Kung Fu Panda 3 as the possible love interest of Po. Reports also speculate that Mei Mei is introduced to Po in an arranged match, explaining her colorful garments in the photo below.

And of course, a Kung Fu Panda movie is not complete if there are no riveting fight scenes, thus, a super villain is required. USA Today reports that the villain that will enter Kung Fu Panda 3 is Kai, voiced by J.K. Simmons, known for his villain characters in movies such as Spider-Man, Oz, and Whiplash. Brandishing two jade swords and donning a set of fearful horns, Kai may be the toughest villain that Po will have to defeat in Kung Fu Panda 3.

Simmons shares his thoughts on voicing Kai for Kung Fu Panda 3, and drops a few hints as to why Kai is making trouble for the pandas.

“Let’s just say Kai has been away. Now that’s he’s back, he’s not happy about life in general. One thing he finds when he returns is that pandas make him particularly unhappy…You have to find the nature of the beast that Kai is. There’s a lot of vocal stuff I’m throwing out there that’s somewhere between dialogue and animal growls when Kai snorts.”

Watch out for Kung Fu Panda 3 to hit theaters January 29, 2016.
